The vines were planted by previous owner Otto Kasper from a cutting of an old and closely guarded Shiraz clone. They're still worked with some fairly antique machinery, and the crop is always minuscule.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKeith Hentschke's estate has become one of the Barossa's most talked-about addresses, with chief winemaker Andrew Quin crafting wines that pack plenty of power but never lose their shape. G-Block is the source here: very shallow red clay loam over shattered limestone on an elevated eastern slope. The vines struggle for vigour, and that's exactly the point.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e2023 was a cool, mild year in the Barossa, with below-average daytime temperatures and cool nights. Flavour built slowly and naturally high acidity held on, with picking stretching from mid-March well into April. The fruit was mostly destemmed with a bit of whole bunch, basket pressed, then given 22 months in French oak, 55% of it new.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt's a big, deep Shiraz, all plum and dark berries with violets and warm spice - cinnamon, clove, a touch of star anise. Fine-grained tannins and that cool-year acidity give it real drive through a long finish.
