Matthias Runkel is the Burg-hound and his experience at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf comes into focus here, with an elegant but concentrated red from one of the family’s top sites.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe organically grown vines sit on terraces in Gau-Algesheim, with only a thin layer of loess over limestone. Water is scarce on these slopes, producing small berries with plenty of flavour and ripe tannin. Christian and Matthias hand-pick and destem the fruit, then ferment it with wild yeasts in open vats, working it gently by hand. Eighteen months in French and German oak follows before bottling without filtration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDark berries, earthy notes and spice lead, with a little tea and liquorice adding savoury detail. It’s medium-bodied and fresh, but with plenty of power and concentration too.
