Description

The Thorley Riesling is grown by Tessa & Jeremy at VS&B high up on their small vineyard in Stanley outside Beechworth. It's frightfully cold up there on the property, perfect conditions for growing fine-boned, delicate Rieslings.

Jeremy has spent a vintage at the great Keller Wines in the Rheinhessen, and Tessa is obsessed with the variety - it's fair to say they know their way Riesling. With this wine, made from their own home-grown fruit, no stone is left unturned getting this to its full potential.

In contrast to their King Valley Rieslings, this is close to bone dry. A little time in old oak fills out the texture and will allow for excellent ageing potential. It's a gorgeous wine made in very small quantities.

"Bright lemon in the glass. Dried mango, honey and cardamom spice aromas. Deep and intense, mango pudding, buttered shortcrust pastry and cinnamon sugar notes. The power and complexity is something to behold, all components are singular yet they harmonise with a deft touch and run incredibly long. Finishing with a clip of bright acidity and grip to ensure you return swiftly. Not a riesling to be taken lightly, but will reward patience and considered food matching."

"Flavour and texture. Different to your average Australian Riesling, and very good in that way too."

"Fantastic wine. Texture, freshness, length, concentration. Saline elements for sure, and the salted Thai green mango thing actually happens in the wine too, absolutely. Really good wine, distinct and interesting and delicious. 94 points, maybe more."

"Tightly wound, vibrant, bright, structured. Very good. This will do well with five to ten years in cellar."

94 points - "Apple strudel (with the cinnamon, yes), some lime, some flowers. It’s juicy with some nutty and spicy flavours, a charming mouth-perfume, chalky and dusty texture, bright sappy acidity, a saline and savoury edge, with a lively tonic water finish of excellent length, and some richness. There’s a little bit of green mango stuff here too, like you get in those delicious Thai salads. I just thought I’d mention that, because this wine may go well with that sort of thing. Flavour and texture. Different to your average Australian Riesling, and very good in that way too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2022 Thorley Riesling is laden with straw and tatami, lemongrass, wet wool and scratched citrus. In the mouth, the wine is viscose and wide, textural and engaging. Instead of the usual linear fruit profile, this is populated by yellow fruits of some opulence, exotic spices and plenty of interest. Recommended." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "Apple blossom, pastry dough, fresh lemonade, lemon sherbet and subtle macadamia are sliced up by a slatey mineral cut. Very hightoned and pretty with pops of sweetness adding appeal. Air and temperature unlocks bath salts, savoury lemon thyme, and a whisper of mandarin pith. The palate is quite coiled and tensile, with a tight frame of pithy acid and chalky phenolics constricting around lemon juice, lemon pith, slatey minerals again, crushed green apple. If there’s residual sugar here, it’s completely guillotined by the acid which keeps excellent line and freshness through a long finish. Tightly wound, vibrant, bright, structured. Very good. This will do well with five to ten years in cellar." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

Bright pale straw. A nose with talcy blossom floral notes, a daub of lemon butter and grapefruit pith.

The palate is quite energetically dry and deceptively powerful, with floral intensity driven by an interplay between slatey dry extract and toothsome minerally acidity. The wine walks amongst orchard and stone fruits – yellow apple, unsweet apricots, a building tart kumquat note.

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
