Description

The Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 is comprised of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small parcels of Malbec and Petit Verdot from one of the great sites of the Yarra Valley.

The individual parcels are fermented in small open-top tea-chest fermenters, the final blend crafted to showcase each individual season on this iconic Yarra Valley estate.

This is a glorious wine, a benchmark of the famous Yarra Valley Cabernet wine style.

It's a wine destined for great things. Winemaker Sarah Crowe knocked this out of the park. It should be an essential part of any serious Australian cellar.

"At once emphatically fragrant and lighter than air and yet deeper, more concentrated, more enduring and more structured. No Australian wine of modern era exemplifies this profound juxtaposition more emphatically than Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No.1 2021."
- Tyson Stelzer

"Powerful and balanced with lots of layers. Ripe, chewy tannins course through the wine's concentrated fruit, yet the overall impression is one of balance and harmony. A serious and complete cabernet."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"It drinks superbly now but leave it alone for a few years and watch it grow and build more detail. Very stylish wine."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Winemaking

All hand harvested and sent across a sorting table, only the very best berries go into this wine. The Cabernet fruit is individually berry sorted before being crushed to build structure through fermentation. Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot are whole berry ferments for fragrance and to build palate weight. The majority fermented in half-tonne fermenters and hand plunged twice daily. One third of the Cabernet component fermented in a brand new 3500L upright oak cask and spending 8 weeks on skins for complexity and to build the savoury component. All matured in French oak, 40% new until blending after 15 months barrel maturation.

Technical Data

Varietals: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 11% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot

Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia.

Vines: The first plantings at Yarra Yering into block No. 1 were these Cabernet vines and the name was born. The Malbec was also part of the original 1969 plantings. Merlot vines were originally interplanted with the Cabernet, with subsequent plantings made in 1990 on the newly acquired neighbouring land along with the Petit Verdot.

Cellaring: Ideally some bottle maturation will give this wine time to unfurl. Under suitable cellaring conditions it will evolve for 20+ years if you wish to show restraint, otherwise choose your occasion and enjoy!

Alcohol: 13.5%

100 points - "The unique ability of Cabernet Sauvignon to unite the contrasts of perfumed lightness with deep concentration, grace with structure and elegance with enduring longevity is unparalleled in the wine world. Its finest expressions are at once emphatically fragrant and lighter than air and yet deeper, more concentrated, more enduring and more structured. No Australian wine of modern era exemplifies this profound juxtaposition more emphatically than Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No.1 2021." - Tyson Stelzer

98 points - "A deep, bright crimson purple. Bordeaux-like with its aromas of cassis, iodine, bay leaf and some olive tapenade. The oak is already well integrated. Powerful and balanced with lots of layers. Ripe, chewy tannins course through the wine's concentrated fruit, yet the overall impression is one of balance and harmony. A serious and complete cabernet." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

98 points - "Deep, bright purple-red colour with a bouquet of cassis, mulberry, blackberry and some hints of peat-moss, nori and dried herbs. In the mouth, it’s finely tuned and tensioned, elegantly weighted and structured with intensity and drive, the tannins fine grained and perfectly matched to the flavour. Long, long carry. It drinks superbly now but leave it alone for a few years and watch it grow and build more detail. Very stylish wine." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "A great Bordeaux blend. Among the finest of the New World. The proviso, of course, is that one must appreciate levity, a noble astringency and a glimpse of cabernet's verdant underbelly The pencil lead tannins are detailed and thoroughly convincing. Cassis, tobacco leaf, spearmint and graphite. A fine, gravely finish, if not a bit drying and austere. Age should sort this out. Best from 2026. This will go a long way." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
