About The Wine

Since 2003, the Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay has been their flag bearer for premium quality Chardonnay.

Sourced predominantly from their Lenswood vineyard, this meticulously farmed plot produces exquisite fruit. The winemaking behind the M3 is very classic. The fruit is chilled, whole-bunch pressed to oak and matured for 9 months prior to bottling. The quality of the fruit left to do the talking.

This wine has something of a cult following. It is loved for its combination of power and precision. Without question, one of the benchmarks for premium Chardonnay in the Hills region.

About Shaw + Smith

Shaw + Smith is one of the flagbearers of the Adelaide Hills wine region.

Over 25 years they have built a brilliant brand based around refined but energetic cool climate expressions of Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The wines all now comfortably rank amongst the best examples of their respective varieties in the country. The constant pursuit of excellence has seen Shaw + Smith stand out from the pack.

With the formidable talents of winemaker Adam Wadewitz at the helm, this iconic producer has never been in better form.

The Wine Front

"Its impeccable self. Flavours of pear and quartz, nectarine and cedar, a gentle floral element, a subtle lactose note. It feels powerful, taut and refined at once. This is not a smack-you-in-the-eyes chardonnay and yet its quality and intensity are clear. As with many of the finest Australian chardonnays now, this will need a year or three from release to start showing its best self." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The Real Review

"Light, bright green-yellow colour. Toasty nut bouquet, smoky oak, lovely fruit along with it, the palate delicate and restrained but intense at the same time, penetrating and long. A very taut, refined wine, with attractive tension and persistence. This is lovely now and has room to grow." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The Weekend Australian

"Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, fermented and matured in French oak. Its crystal clear quartz-green hue signals the ’21 vintage in all its glory, the bouquet and palate a seamless array of nectarine, grapefruit and cashew. The feel and flow of the aftertaste implore a second glass." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

"This is such a beautifully crafted Adelaide Hills chardonnay! Complex, flinty nose with notes of toasted baguette, lime zest, Asian pear and fresh pineapple. I love the underplayed power on the very focused, medium-bodied palate. Fine tannins underline the long and intense wet-stone finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - JamesSuckling.com

Decanter

Decanter 2022 Wines of the Year - "Restrained, elegant and complex, with no hint of tropical fruit but relevant citrus and white fruit notes in this cool-climate Chardonnay. Oak integration is stunning and the wine shows personality, vibrancy, mouthwatering acidity and a precise, long finish." - Panel Tasting: Vincenzo Arnese, Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW, Amanda Barnes (Decanter)

    Great Chardonnay

Bought this wine after it was recommended to me by a friend. And it did not disappoint. Beautiful complex Chardonnay, oak is prominent but not overpowering, great acidity too. Would love to try and aged version of this wine.

M3 is one of the great valued Chardonnay's. It's only one of the few producers that is also a Master of Wine(MW). Recommended if you're looking for a good Chardonnay

    Adelaide Hill classic

Well balance in all aspect, especially on the acidity which make this wine can be drink on its own (I found the acidity were too high from their previous vintages). Classic Aussie style chardonnay, just a bit pricey for what it is. There are cheaper and better options, not from Adelaide Hill tough..
