Description

With their "Feri Maris" (Latin for 'Wild Sea'), Quealy is demonstrating the delicious expression of Pinot Grigio grown in the maritime climate of the Mornington Peninsula.

Yes there's the classic notes of citrus, apple, and pear, but there's also something more; a slight briny, salty note, like something taken straight from the sea. The grapes come from the McCarthys' own certified organic blocks, gently pressed and fermented with wild yeast.

A small amount of sulphur is added prior to bottling.

Grapes handpicked on 1st March 2021 at 11.92 Baume. Gently loaded into the press as whole bunches and slowly gently squeezed so only the finest delicate juice expressed. This juice selection allows us to make wine without any additions of yeast or acid, and only the minimum concentration of sulphur to preserve.

The finesse of the wine stores energy in the palate that is so attractive and ensures wine longevity. Finish Ph 3.43.

Each Pinot Grigio vine is shaped as two arches of twelve buds each. A strange, important shape that drains the hormone from the ends and disperses it along the cane so all the buds get the love from the vine roots to grow and be their individual best. We are in a region where fruitfulness is dampened with our cool and cloudy maritime climate. Responding with insight and bespoke technique rewards with properly ripe exciting grapes to work with.

93 Points - "Bright, light yellow colour, with aromas of almonds and pears, clean and fresh and attractive, possibly a trace of oak barrel involvement. The wine is light and soft in the mouth and has good intensity and depth of flavour, with refreshing balanced acidity and some richness of fruit—almost a touch of opulence. A nice wine, albeit more gris than grigio in style." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 Points - "The label states fruit off the single home block, planted in 1996 and organic; hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, wild-yeast ferment, 25% in barrel, with some mlf. It's a refined, textural pinot grigio in the style of the finest Italians. Quince, not-quite-ripe pears, lemon cream, daikon and tonic water with tangy acidity that tempers the texture to keep it smooth and fine." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

Quealy

Kathleen Quealy is part of the winemaking heart & soul of Mornington Peninsula.

The first person to plant Pinot Gris in Australia, Kathleen and her husband Kevin McCarthy launched T'Gallant winery in the 90s, pioneering this famous variety. But it was with Quealy Vineyards, based in Merricks North, with the winery and cellar door in the centre of the viticultural action, where they made their mark.

Kathleen has continued to innovate - along with PG, Quealy is renowned for super-interesting expressions of Muscat and Fruilano, experimenting with different degrees of skin contact and fermentation styles. Kathleen & Kevin's son Tom has now taken on the daily winemaking duties, with guidance from Mum and Dad and the wines have never looked better.

Kathleen is a true industry legend and one of the most visionary wine personalities on the Peninsula.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
