About The Wine
The Onannon Shiraz is a great illustration of how well Shiraz can grow on the Mornington Peninsula.
The first thing you notice is the mix of blue and black fruits on the nose, bringing the wine into the dark spectrum, which the fruit tones are bright and clear. Due to 30% whole bunches being used, there is a nice savoury element, and as the wine was matured in old barrels, oak is not a major presence in the wine, instead aiding with structure in the background.
If you're looking for a nice wine for Friday nights on the couch with takeaway, this is a really good choice.
About Onannon
Onannon was founded by Will Byron, Kaspar Hermann and Sam Middleton.
The trio met whilst working at Coldstream Hills many years ago. Will is now the chief winemaker at Stonier in Mornington Peninsula, Kasper is head guy at Toolangi, and Sam has taken over winemaking duties at his iconic family estate, Mount Mary in the Yarra Valley where he and Kaspar have worked for years.
With Onannon, they are looking to make wines that excite them from Mornington Peninsula and Geelong, focussing primarily on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
With strong relationships with great growers, this is more than just a hobby, Onannon is a passion project.
