2021 Kalleske Parallax Grenache

Barossa Valley, SA

Super light, almost Pinot-esque example of Grenache from biodynamic vines in the Barossa Valley.

Wild-eyed and sapidly beguiling drinking.

About The Wine

A lovely, lighter, frisky Grenache wine here from Troy Kalleske & family.

This colourful range of wines from Kalleske aims to take classic Barossa varieties and reimagine them in a modern context. Here is Grenache in a very light, easy drinking style. The fruit for this wine comes off the vine up to three weeks earlier than the other Grenache fruit on the Kalleske block.

Picking so much earlier brings a whole array of strawberry, raspberry and sweet floral notes to the wine. It's also much lower in alcohol (12.0%) than your traditional Barossa Grenache.

It's a very tasty rendition of the variety.

About Kalleske

The Kalleske family have been farming their property in Greenock since 1853, and it remains a very family affair.

Thanks to seventh generation brothers Troy and Tony they made the move from grape-growers to wine producers, and they produce an enviable range of great value to high brow wines, classic to experimental.

Their 120 acre vineyard that is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel - and it has all been certified organic and biodynamic since 1998.

From The Producer

Grenache is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It is typically harvested late in the season when it is fully ripe to display gorgeous rich sweet red fruit characters and soft supple tannins with a generous and supple mouthfeel. But when harvested early in the season a divergent and equally impressive wine can result.

Parallax Grenache is picked 2-3 weeks earlier than normal and combined with fermentation on stalks and minimal maturation has resulted in an admirably divergent wine compared to the norm from this variety, showing the versatility of Grenache.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Sweet scented, rose hip tea and raspberries, some green herb and a touch of mixed/nondescript botanicals wafting through. Juicy-soft in the palate, medium weight, very bright, a bit sweet fruited but with fine tannin shaping things nicely and a good screw of herbs n spice to finish, lingering. Quite dark fruited in essence, but lots of freshness and tension in the mix, elevating things well. Good drinking." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"It's grenache Jim, but not as we know it. Before us, is Kalleske's distinctly lo-fi take on the much-loved variety. Certified biodynamic, single-vineyard fruit, wild fermented with stalks and skins for 10 days, it cuts a decidedly funky, pinot-esque line across the tongue with Campari-like, amaro and herbal nuances, souk-like spice and crunchy red-fruited verve. Wild-eyed and sapidly beguiling drinking." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Real Review

"The colour is medium to light and bright, with purple tints, while the bouquet is young and fresh and has a vegetal note from the whole-bunch fermentation. The palate is medium-bodied, softly textural, the herbal characters meshing well with red fruit flavours. It’s succulent and supple, a prime example of why grenache is often called the pinot of the Barossa." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)
