About The Wine

It's no secret that Barney at Garagiste make a great Pinot.

The Balnarring Pinot comes from a little further down from the hill on the Mornington Peninsula than the Merricks, and it makes a fascinating comparison. It's a fine and pretty drop, a little lighter than its Merricks counterpart.

Think juicy & bright yet savoury, perfume & subtle spice, red fruits all wrapped up in a satin bow. Pure pleasure in a glass, a must-have for all lovers of a lighter Pinot.

About Garagiste

Garagiste is the brainchild of Barnaby Flanders.

After leaving Allies Wines in 2003 he embarked on a mission to produce small batch premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under his own label in his beloved Mornington Peninsula.

Barney loves the sub-regionality to be exploited in Mornington Peninsula, the slight alterations in aspect and soil profile within this small wine producing region provide him with the scaffolding around which he builds his stunning harem of small batch wines.

They are only ever made in small quantities so time is of the essence if you want to explore the world of Garagiste.

From The Producer

Another welcome return after a brief hiatus. The Balnarring was wild-fermented with a high portion (as much as possible) of whole berries--unlike the Merricks Pinot there is no whole-bunch influence here (Flanders explains that from this vineyard, the stems can easily dominate the fruit). The wine was then matured in 300-litre hogsheads (roughly 25% new, François Frères) and spent ten months on lees before bottling (unfined and unfiltered). As is the norm, there is a prettiness to the Balnarring not present in the Merricks which is darker and more savoury. There’s a fineness to the tannins and a lighter tread.

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)

"A savoury stamp this vintage, that decompresses the slight sweet-cherry accent into a minor component. Chinese five-spice, chinotto, wood smoke and a smatter of dried herbs form the core of flavours. But texture is key. Fine sandpaper tannins and the mouth-watering acidity leads everything to a decisive, slightly dry finish. An austere, compelling style." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Quite nice

This one has more earthiness compared to the Merricks and less approachable now. It certainly has very nice qualities. I like the Merricks more, but it does come down to personal preferences.
