About

About The Wine

Here's a delicate and flowery Pinot Noir from the Basket Range, that also shows some concentration and density.

Fruit picked nice and early by Jasper Button, wild ferment, old oak - gently, gently all the way to bottle.

It's a soft wine with lovely purity and prettiness, but with a dash of serious pinosity. One thing we know for sure about Commune of Buttons is they make a damn fine Pinot.

Yum, and double yum.

About Commune of Buttons

Siblings Jasper and Sophie Button returned home a few years ago to help save their family vineyard, planted primarily to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay 20 years ago by their mother.

They began restoring the site and transitioning to organic and biodynamic principles, and at some point decided that rather than sell off their prized grapes to others, they’d turn their hand to winemaking.

Just a couple vintages in, the results have been fantastic. The wines are made naturally with only minimal sulphur additions and slow, gentle ferments. The Buttons' wines are as loveable as the family who made them.

Additional Info

From The Producer

The Basket Town Red is from the villages of Summertown (Cemetery Block vineyard, Jenny and Jaime Griggs), Basket Range (Estate vineyard) and Piccadilly (Eurilla vineyard, Alan Dean). The Basket Town red reflects the vintage each year with the intention of blending the parcels to show the subtle complexity of red fruits and acid structure freshness that makes Piccadilly Valley pinot so attractive when handled with care.

The grapes were harvested in late March, but a cooler ripening season meant that the potential alcohol was low although the phenolic ripeness and acidity were excellent. At harvest the fruit was chilled then destemmed with between 10% and 50% whole bunches used depending on the parcel. The ferments were pressed at around 10 days with the wine settled in tank and allowed to pass through malo- lactic fermentations. The elevage was for 6 months in barriques and hogsheads on fine lees. The parcels were blended and aged for a further 4 months in stainless steel.

The wine is pretty and red fruited, distinctively pinot with cherries and savoury characters – very pleasant.
