About the Wine
Pinot Noir has a wide range of iterations, from deeply savoury and earthy wines to bright, fleshy and pure juicy ones. The Combes Moonah was 100% destemmed, so there isn't a lot of savoury tannin here. This this is all about the fruit, and it powers through and through.
Coming from a cold climate, there is some depth and darkness to this. While the fruit is pure and unrestrained, don't think for a second that it's a jubilant wine. Instead, it's a brooding elixir of mulberries, plums and ripe cherries. If you've ever felt that Pinot Noir was a bit too light for you, and needed a bit more body, this is a wine which will get you where you want to go.
About Combes
The Combes wines are made by thoughtful young avant-garde wine producer, Oscar Hermann.
Sourced from excellent vineyards in the Yarra Valley and farther afield, Oscar takes a minimal intervention approach to his winemaking practices.
The wines coming out of his cellar are excellent. They are raw, energetic and show a distinct sense of place. Each bottle you open feels like it's a living thing. Each vineyard he showcases shines in the glass.
As Mike Bennie once wrote about his eclectic suite of wines, "you should dive in."
