2021 Brash Higgins Ripple Nero d'Avola Cabernet

McLaren Vale, SA

A deep and juicy red blend of Nero d'Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon, from the creative mind of Brad Hickey.

...crisp, succulent and distinctly vibrant.

About the Wine

Brash Higgins came up with this wine after one of his fellow winemakers suggested he take whole bunch Cabernet Sauvignon, flood it with Nero d'Avola and let the concoction ferment.

He was both intrigued and haunted by this idea - so, a couple years later, he gave it a go and the Ripple was born.

It's a mouthwateringly juicy wine that's truly delightful to drink, and the smash factor is dialled way, way up. Only a small amount was produced, so you better get your hands on one tout de suit...

About Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.

If you want 'classic' McLaren Vale, or if you want the true avant-garde, it's all available in the Brash Higgins range.

From the Producer

Made from freshly picked, destemmed Nero d’Avola grapes which were quickly pressed. The juice from the press was channeled into a half ton bin full of waiting whole cluster Cabernet Sauvignon. All the Nero juice covered the Cabernet grapes and their stems, submerging the clusters completely. The idea is that the sugar in the Cabernet berries, starved of oxygen, will ferment inside their little berry bodies and create a lighter, slightly confectionary flavour profile. All the fruit for the ensuing wine was handpicked off our organic Omensetter Estate Vineyard.

Translucent garnet hue with a nose redolent of blueberries and candied wild strawberries with a touch of hedgerow, or, as wine scribe Ned Goodwin MW puts it, the “verdant echo”. On the palate deep and juicy with powdery red fruits and enough tannin and acidity to pull and keep it all taut.

Blend : Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Nero d'Avola (50%)
ABV : 12.90%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2024
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"It does blue fruits and cranberry tang. It’s floral and fragrant and has that nice cherry elixir medicinal thing going on. It feels crisp, succulent and distinctly vibrant. It’s got a sweet heart but finishes bright and refreshing. A fresh, just shy of medium weight red with vim and vigour to it. A delightful drink ensues." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Nero d'Avola, destemmed, pressed and fermenting, before transfer to a bin of whole-cluster cabernet. Thereafter, the cabernet is forced into a carbonic fermentation, imparting plenty of jubey red fruits, blueberry, a grind of white pepper and that verdant echo to the finish. Imminent pleasure." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)
