About The Wine

Jo Marsh's Billy Button 'The Alluring' Tempranillo is a classic cool-climate Temp with a little attitude.

Jo selects two parcels of fruit each year from two different vineyards in her beloved Alpine Valleys. One parcel has fruit which is a little brighter, the other a little more savoury. Together they create just the right amount of 'allure' in the wine, a Tempranillo which is ready to go, right now, whenever you are.

Made in typically small amounts (as is the Billy Button way), you'll need to be quick if you want to give this a whirl.

About Billy Button

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

From The Producer

As the noble red grape of Spain’s north, particularly the Rioja region, Tempranillo has gradually been planted in Australian regions with varying results. It is a grape well suited to cool climates and Jo’s mission to focus on alternative varietals combined with the success the variety has already achieved in the region made it a no-brainer for Jo to include Tempranillo in her line-up. The result is an intriguing dry red wine that loves good food.

Ruby in colour. Ripe berries, cloves, and spice on the nose. Abundant berry fruits and supple dense tannins are immersed in a spiciness that delivers a pleasing savoury edge.

Halliday Wine Companion

"A variety of techniques employed for fermentation including whole bunches, whole berries, cold soak, 9 months' maturation in Flexcube with no oak. The use of Flexcube, i.e., no oak, ensures some powerfully persuasive fruit is elevated and totally engaging in this utterly delicious wine. Captures the grape and its perfect suitability to the Alpine Valleys in a fine display of juicy, dark fruits and lively spice, red liquorice and supple tannins." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is just scrummy yummy, full stop. It’s so fresh, so well balanced, so well fruited and ultimately so silken. Forest berries and cedar wood, a candied fruit – I can’t quite place it, almost into Pez but not quite, almost like marshmallow – and a flash of woodsy herbs. It drinks ever-so-well and ever-so-easily, and yet it has just enough substance to be considered serious." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"Deep red/purple hues. The bouquet is fresh and alluring, almost jammy black fruits and spices with star anise and a bloody, ferrous overtone, the palate tightly focused and fine, elegantly stated and long, with intensity and linear shape." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)
