About the Wine

The Bannockburn vineyard in Geelong produces some of Australia's most interesting Pinot Noir.

These 30+ year-old vines, planted by the legendary Gary Farr, yield fruit with immense power and concentration. There's a unique savouriness and gaminess that presents in most Pinot Noirs from this site.

Winemaker Matt Holmes is honing those characters and crafting the wine beautifully these days, allowing the vineyard to sing in full voice.

This is a regal, cellarworthy wine from one of the country's great viticultural sites. One that will mature beautifully with time in the cellar.

About Bannockburn

For decades, the Bannockburn vineyard has been producing Burgundian-inspired wines which truly reflect the winery's unique terroir.

Originally planted by the legendary Gary Farr, the wines that comes from this unique vineyard in Geelong show a rare sense of place. The ancient riverbed soils impart a distinct saline character and a power which makes the wines from this place immediately identifiable.

With the arrival of new head winemaker, Matt Holmes, the next chapter of Bannockburn's long history has commenced.

New ideas, a fresh take, the start of something new and exciting for this famous patch of earth.

"Batches of pinot noir from different blocks, wild fermented with 20% whole bunches. Matured 10 months in French hogsheads (25% new). A wine of real gravitas and presence, the '21 reflects a most impressive year. Abundant, enticing aromas in pristine red fruits, maritime herbs, humus and dusty beets. The palate fairly bristles in fruit freshness and energy, the tannins pricking the tastebuds and laying the foundation for a long life. Oak? Yes, it's evident in the texture and the binding but totally integrated." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"This is a beauty. Fragrant and attractive from the outset but then expansive on the palate as well. Earth, twigs, root vegetables and cherries with woodsy spice notes rippling throughout. Tension and flow, texture and tannin. There’s a smoky meatiness to the aftertaste, mixed in with decaying red roses, and it’s most attractive way for the wine to sail out. Drink it now, drink it later; it will deliver." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.

First impressions of this local Pinot Noir, well local for me, are one of surprise and delight.

Aromas of berry and a strong sense of self.

It’s as though the wine itself knows that it is a very good wine.

A peppery start that sits comfortably on the palate leaving a lingering sense of berry and passion fruit.

This wine maker knows their stuff, highly recommend and will scour the local outlets and continue my journey sampling this makers wares.

I look forward to the trip.

A satisfying pinot. The palate is rich and smoky. Long finish. Good value, too.
