About The Wine

The Welkin range by Aphelion is all about experimental one-off releases.  Hopefully this lovely Grenache isn't a one off!

It comes from Grenache heartland in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, with a mix of old 80 year old vines (for concentration) and young 20 year old vines (for freshness and vitality).  It's early-picked, destemmed and fermented as whole berries, and then aged in large format foudre, all of which result in a lighter-bodied, more jubey style of Grenache, bursting with energy and life!

Another delicious Grenache from one of the best producers of the variety in this country.  Very limited, don't miss it!

About Aphelion

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, most often there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.

DDS review

Beautifully intense purple colour with aromatics that jump out of the glass. Pure fruited aromas of redcurrant and cinnamon follow through on to the palate with fresh acidity keeping the wine lively and vibrant. A small percentage of whole bunch fermentation in the wine adds a savoury element and herbal notes. The Welkin Grenache is a light bodied wine that works very well in an aperitivo setting - Aphelion

Halliday Wine Companion

"Sourced from 3 vineyards: the Lopestri site at the southern end of the Vale, along with 2 old Blewitt Springs plots. A dash of whole bunch. In tank, before pressing to an armoury of large-format neutral French wood for a brief élévage. Brisk and attractively edgy, with a framework of granular sandy tannins within which rosewater, bon-bon and pomegranate notes reverberate and ricochet across the medium-bodied palate. Finishes a bit lolly-sweet. Nothing a chill shan't fix." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)
