Description

A new chapter here for Andrew Thomas - the first time he's made a Semillon from outside the Hunter Valley!

The 2020 vintage forced Thommo to look abroad, with some fruit kindly offered up via good mate and winemaking legend Reid Bosward from an old vineyard in the Barossa Valley. With extra ripeness from the Barossa Thommo's thrown some oak at this, adding texture and complexity to what is deliciously pure Semillon fruit.

An exciting new chapter for Andrew Thomas, and a must-try for any Semillon fan.

Specialising in Semillon and shiraz, Thomas Wines produce world-class, uniquely regional wine styles. This is the first time we have produced a Semillon from the Barossa Valley. In fact, the first time we have produced a single vineyard Semillon from outside the Hunter Valley. The idea came about as a result of two of our three single-vineyard Hunter Semillons not being picked in the 2020 vintage due to the effects of smoke taint on those particular vineyards.

Joe's Block, owned and operated by Jim and Cheree Boehm, is situated on the deep alluvial loam soils of the Barossa's Light Pass district. The 1.7Ha block was planted in 1983. Like many Australian wine regions, the Barossa was also in the grips of quite a severe drought, receiving only 40% of its average long term rainfall ahead of the 2020 growing season. The lower yields were offset by a coolish end to the ripening period, leading to a slightly later picking date of 19th February.

The hand-picked fruit was sent to my good mates at Kaesler wines for whole bunch pressing, and then the chilled juice was transported to the Hunter for fermentation. As a salute to the traditional Barossa style, half of the wine was fermented in used French oak Hogsheads (300L), the other half in tank providing an excellent stylistic contrast to our classic Hunter Semillons.

95 Points - "So, 2020, not so good for the eastern seaboard, and many winemakers have called mates for a bit of extra grape source to help out. Thommo seeking some extra fruit around some troublesome Hunter Valley vineyards reached out to his good mate Reid Bosward in South Australia for some semillon fruit and has made this wine. This wine matures in barrel and stainless, builds a bit of texture, it does something good and different in 2020. How cool that this significant producer, if not one of the greats of semillon, is doing this with the 'other region's' fruit…It's awesome. It does texture and flavour so well. Succulent and faintly chalky (the finish is all chalk), this wine runs with green pear, lemon, green melon, and lots of blanched almond. Yep. Unreal. It moves with energy, it holds texture, it does savoury too. It's delicious! Complex, compelling, clever and good. It shifts the dial on semillon while making you drink something awesome. Bravo, Thommo." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
