Description

What’s the Story Rory (never gets old)? Pushing boundaries is the headline with this wine, forcing a Shiraz dominant region into taking its southern Rhone cousin a bit more seriously.

Grampians Grenache may be a newish addition to the Aussie wine scene, but winemaker Rory Lane has a firm belief in the quality of fruit coming out of the region, and this wine is a fantastic example of what is possible. Floral, and very bright, the aromatics and flavour profile on this wine scream red fruits, pink flowers, and oodles of depth.

Light in body, yet big in personality, this wine imbues all the wonderful character of Grenache that we have grown to cherish.

Only the third release from these young vines at the Arrawatta Vineyard south of Great Western. A coolish and very low yielding year produced a light to medium bodied Grenache with excellent tension and crisp cranberry fruits. The natural ferments, large format old oak and zero movements of the wine up to bottling has preserved every ounce of flavour, aroma and complexity possible. It is a riot of florals, spices and crushed herbs, and will delight right from release.

93 Points - "Upfront it comes across as fragrant and easy-to-like but there's more to it than that. It's beautifully structured and tight with both acidity and tannin, which works handsomely with the pretty, juicy fruit on offer. Herb and twig notes play roles too; it's light but insistent, less and more at once. Grenache has found a new home in the Grampians and all indications are that it's loving life there." Campbell Mattinson (Wine Front)

89 Points - "Sourced off the Arawatta vineyard , destemmed, natural ferment on skins, maturation in 1000L old oak vars and old 500L puncheons for 7 months. Grenache in the Grampians is pet project for winemaker, Rory Lane, who sees a great future for the grape. Look at that colour, a bright, electric cherry red! The scent is no less bright and perky with cherry bon-bon, musky florals, spice, raspberry and red cherry. It all rolls easily off the tongue." Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

92 Points - "Bright ruby red in the glass. Black cherry, anise, and bay leaf aromas. The palate flows with a silky touch, notes of black cherry, fresh liquorice and bay leaf all sit up and fill the senses. Tannins are a fine guiding hand to a long finish that lingers with a black stone minerality that intrigues." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

The Story

Rory Lane, the main man at The Story, didn't have an entirely conventional path to the wine world. With a degree in ancient Greek tragedy, comparative literature, and politics, he stumbled into winemaking and found he had more than a knack for it.

Since 2004, he's been tinkering with predominantly Rhône varieties in the Grampians, turning out some unique expressions from this Shiraz-heavy region. His winery is located in the city suburbs of Melbourne, not your typical winery setting, but it suits him down to a tee.

Rory's winemaking philosophy is to keep it relatively simple and hands-off. Grapes arrive, get gently processed, and then are left to their own devices with minimal interference. No additives, no excessive tinkering. Just good, solid, classic winemaking producing some exceptional value wines.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
