About the Wine

The Stefano Lubiana Sasso Pinot Noir shows ripe and vibrant aromas and flavours of cherry and raspberry, as well as some earthy characters that give the wine some depth. As expected from a Pinot Noir of this quality, the tannins are soft and silky. A truly beautiful Tasmanian Pinot Noir.

The fruit for the Stefano Lubiana Sasso Pinot Noir comes from three blocks within their vineyard, described by Steve and Monique Lubiana as "unique". Whole bunches of grapes are stomped by foot and then fermented in vats with wild yeasts. The decision as to which of the three to five barrels will make up the Sasso depends on their ability "to produce a mid-weight wine with soft, savoury tannins and well-balanced acidity".

About Stefano Lubiana

Steve and Monique Lubiana were pioneers of biodynamic farming in Tasmania.

Their gorgeous estate was the first to adopt the principals of biodynamics in 2008. Since then the quality of the Stefano Lubiana premium range has soared. The wines are immaculate: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sparklings all packed with flavour intensity and perfect balance.

As Mike Bennie observed, "Geez, there’s been some wind in the sail on their estate in southern Tasmania. This is top notch stuff right here."

Steve, a fifth-generation winemaker, is now one of Tasmania's leading producers, no doubt about it.

Additional Info

From the Producer

100% estate-grown, biodynamic-certified, single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Lubiana family vineyard in Granton in the Derwent Valley. The wine brings together three special terroirs: Grey gravelly loam over clay; black clay and grey gravelly silt with clay underneath; and classic terra rossa of red clay loam over marl limestone. The low- vigour parcels gave yields of 4.5 tonnes per hectare.

This wine is a barrel selection, chosen in the winery, not just the vineyard. 100% whole bunches are foot stomped, wild fermented in small open-top vats. Matured in French barriques (about 30% new) for 10 months before bottling under cork.

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)

The Wine Front

"Any way you come at this you see quality. Tannins are light but shapes things well, oak is spicy and seasons gently, fruit is powerful but refined, cruise control and then some. Fragant as well, pickled and fresh cherries, woody, smoky spice and new leather, some black olive in the mix, turned, fresh earth. An earthiness to taste too but delivered in the veins of a sinewy muscle of dark berry/cherry fruitiness and lifted on brightness and coolness. Taut, long, luxurious. Beautiful pinot." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
