About The Wine

Lovers of this wine, get excited. This is an absolutely stellar release of one of Australia's benchmark Rosés.

The Spinifex Rosé has become one of Australia's benchmark examples over the years and it's easy to see why. Pete Schell treats the wine seriously, intentionally picking the various fruit components from vineyards up to 120 years of age and blending meticulously for his final product.

So much flavour and depth but oh so elegant and impossible to put down. Bandol, eat your heart out. A no-brainer.

About Spinifex

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley, and very much a pioneer of the changing direction of this famous region.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Pete’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region; they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex. These are brilliant Barossa wines.

From The Producer

Is this Australia's finest rosé? In spite of the relentless proliferation of rosé on the market, Peter Schell's wine--now into its second decade of production--keeps coming up roses. Reflecting an exceptionally low yielding vintage--Schell's dry grown vineyards offering just 15-20% of average--the composition of the '20 rosé weighs in with Mataro (59%) Grenache (35%), and Cinsault (6%). The dominance of Mataro this year reflects both the quality and this variety's late-flowering nature (which avoided the dramatic weather at flowering that hampered the other varieties). The vines are all dry-grown on Barossa vineyards, "mainly bush vines, all hand-picked--old school," chuckles Pete. The average age of vines is 65 years old although the oldest parcels range up to 120 years.

Blend : Mataro (59%), Grenache (35%) & Cinsault (6%)
ABV : 13.00%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2024

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Crushed bunches were macerated for between six and 24-hours before pressing. The wine was fermented in tank with indigenous yeasts, with five per cent fermented and matured in old French oak demi-muids. It was matured on lees prior to being bottled without filtration. The resulting wine offers the kind of vibrant perfume (of red fruit, nectarine and white flowers), texture and crunchy line that were once the exclusive domaine of Provençal rosé." - Pete Schell (Owner/Winemaker)

The Wine Front

"Blush colour. Soft and powdery with a redcurrant and tangerine sort of flavour, plus a slight earthiness, spice and floral things. It’s glossy and fine at once, just the right amount of flavour, and a gentle herb laced finish of fine length and grip. Delightful." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Mataro, grenache, cinsault; unfiltered. Medium salmon/copper hue. Pete Schell has cunningly led out with mataro for the 2nd time, in response to the drought conditions of 2020. Retaining fragrance, brightness and finesse is no easy task, but he's achieved all. Savoury, dry and sophisticated, this is a rosé of tomato and dried herbs, structured less by acidity and more by fine, skilfully managed phenolics. Just the thing with jamon." - Tyson Stelzer (Halliday Wine Companion)
