2020 Sorrenberg Inkerman Road Gamay et al

Beechworth, VIC

This is a declassified estate blend of Gamay with a splash of Merlot from Sorrenberg's bushfire-affected 2020 harvest. It's best drunk young and fresh.

About The Wine

There will be no estate label Sorrenberg Gamay released in 2020, as smoke settled on the Sorrenberg vineyard.

Barry and Jan salvaged a little of the Gamay and a little Merlot and decided to put out an earlier-drinking, nouveau-style red to mark the season.

There is a smokiness to the wine on opening but with a good decant or time in the glass, this will mostly blow off to reveal a bright, jubey red wine with a lovely 'pop' in the mouth.

Barry and Jan recommend drinking this release while it's young and fresh, and if you're so inclined, with a slight chill.

About Sorrenberg

Barry and Jan Morey planted their stunning Beechworth vineyard in 1986. Their first release in 1989 began the Sorrenberg story, a story destined to be one of Australia's great estates.

Barry farms with adherence to biodynamics, believing this to be the best way to get the most out of his home block of 2.4 Ha. on the outskirts of Beechworth. Their wines are famous for their balance and longevity. The wines are made in traditional fashion, with wild yeasts for fermentation, gentle oak maturation and basket pressing for each wine.

The Gamay is arguably their most sought after wine, however, the thumbprint of Barry's attention to detail is stamped across each release and the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet blend are amongst the finest of heir kind in the country.

Sorrenberg is one of the true gems of Beechworth, and indeed Australian, wine.

DDS review

"The nose has nice bright fruit with some oak. The palate shows drying acid with subtle tannins, creating a lingering finish. It is ready to drink, and could also be served slightly chilled." - Barry Morey

The Wine Front

"Smoke damage did the trick at Sorrenberg and so there is no 2020 Sorrenberg label wines, though we get these Inkerman Rd by Sorrenberg labels instead. Kara over at Sorrenberg kindly sent over samples and the word is “we have had the wines tested and while there are minimal free smoke compounds there are some bound compounds, so we are recommending it is a drink now style”. Here’s some wines for those dependent on drinking Sorrenberg each year, like me. This has some smoke scents and flavours but they play like good Rhone reds or similar. Game meat, sour cherry, smoked meats, smoked paprika, and seem to steer away from acrid or distracting in the way some smoke taint can work. The palate is fresh feeling despite the game meat smokiness licking the heels of the wine, it feels like the flavours are lifted on the tang of pomegranate acidity, and include amaro-herbal things, sour cherry and a good slosh of rose water fruity sweetness too. It’s a pleasing drink, quietly complex and very nice to guzzle down. Tannins pucker gently to close. Attractive, is the message." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy).
