2020 Seppeltsfield The Westing Shiraz

Barossa, SA

A rich and ripe single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz with loads of flavour that will last for years

Inky and very strong. Fills all the corners. Excellent. The Beastmaster.

About the Wine

The Seppeltsfield The Westing Shiraz is a single-vineyard wine with a lot of character.

With a few years of bottle age now, the wine shows a brilliant ruby colour and is developing some lovely aged aromas and flavours. The nose is framed by blck and red fruits which are still youthful and fresh, as well as some cocoa and orange, with a hint of meatiness now starting to come through. The palate is rich and firm, with fine tannins and vibrant acidity backed by deep black and red fruits. There is a lovely mouthfeel and the flavours linger on and on.

Drink now or keep 'til 2030 - either way you're in for a treat.

About Seppeltsfield

Seppeltsfield is a Barossa icon winery, famous for its unbroken line of hundred-year old tawny release, and also for its Canary Island date palms which line the avenues of its amazing cellar and winery.

First established by Joseph and Johanna Seppelt in 1850, it has been back in private hands since 2007 after a period of corporate ownership, owned by winemaker Warren Randall.

Their incredible heritage of fortified wines is now being supplemented by a renewed focus on outstanding still table wines. The future seems as bright as its past.

From the Producer

Our ‘Grounds’ red wine releases are a study of the Barossa’s regional hero - the beautiful Shiraz. Grown on single vineyard sites across the patchwork of the Barossa, our wine releases look to express the differences in locale of where our fruit is farmed. As our interpretation of Barossa ‘terroir’, our Grounds releases look to apply a beguiling simplicity for what in European terms is often complicated and complex idea of the relationship between geography, geology, climate and history.

Our 2019 ‘The Westing’ Barossa Shiraz is a single vineyard wine, from the Seppeltsfield ‘V Block’ planting on the Western boundary of the Barossa Valley designated zone. The vineyard undulates over 125m on red-brown Earths over alkaline subsoils, and typically is one of the earliest ripening Shiraz vineyards within the Seppeltsfield stable.. Drink now or with cellaring potential through to 2030.

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

"Very deep, dense colour, purple-black-red hues, the bouquet reserved and on the quieter side but expressing very appealing dried-herb, ironstone, earthy/ferrous and toasty savoury characteristics. These are translated faithfully onto a very full-bodied, power-packed palate which is solidly underscored by voluminous tannins. There's a note of old tractor engines! A super-serious wine which is very savoury and structured and promises to reward long cellaring." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The Wine Front

"Very purple, heaps of ferrous tannin, deep and rich, black fruit, a little bit of rose and herbs of Provence (inc. lavender), tannin is woven and crisscrossed laying down a firm mat of texture, purple fruit and a very bold finish. Inky and very strong. Fills all the corners. Excellent. The Beastmaster." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities.
