About The Wine

Sarah Adamson and Greg Lane have three different takes on Pinot Noir: Marlborough, Central Otago, and this, the Waipara from a region just to the north of Christchurch.

This is the most focused, and arguably complex of the trio. Tightly wound, firm and crunchy, this is a compact Pinot Noir of great style and finesse.

Great drinking and value on offer here. It's hard to track down a kiwi Pinot Noir from a small producer that delivers as much as the Scout wines at this price.

About Scout

Based out of Marlborough, Scout is the passion project for winemaking couple Sarah Adamson and Greg Lane, which they started in 2017 after many years of global winetrotting.

Scout's wines change every year as they seek out premium plots of organically-grown fruit from around NZ.

They are named after the character Scout in Harper Lee's masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird.

From The Producer

Waipara lies just to the north of Christchurch, and is one of the most interesting regions in New Zealand for Pinot Noir, due to the incredibly varied geology and site aspects.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from a west facing site, planted on a limestone/clay mixture. It was farmed organically (certified), and handpicked. A 70/30 mix of Clone 5 and 115. The fruit was in perfect condition when it reached the winery, so we destemmed and let ferment naturally for 25 days with 30% whole bunches. It was pressed into old puncheons for malo, before racking and bottling unfiltered. No additions were made to the wine apart from 50ppm of SO2 at bottling.

Vibrant and aromatic, dark red berries with an element of savouriness, the on the palate. The palate has a mineral feel from the limestone soil, along with firm driving tannins that match the bright acidity.

"Spice, sweet clod earth, dark cherry and dried herbs, even a little violet perfume. It’s fleshy and pleasingly tannic, with a sort of silty Turkish coffee texture, a savoury but plump fruit flavour profile, a little blood orange and dried flower perfume on a pretty long finish. A lot of character, and a ‘natty’ sort of feel too. Perhaps not here for a long time, though certainly here for a good time. Really like this." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.
