About This Wine
From south-eastern Attika, the Savatiano vineyards for this wine are cup-shaped and face north, which prevents the grapes from being overexposed to the heat of the sun. The vineyard is over 50 years old, and is farmed without irrigation, resulting in low-yielding vines that produce grapes with rich, concentrated fruit flavours.
A beautiful balanced Retsina with the classic pine aroma subtly enhanced with lemony citrus. Showcasing the rich and unique flavours of this classic Greek wine with an approachable style for both veterans and newbies to this unique local style.
The wine has excellent balance in the mouth and is a modern representative of the new generation of the popular retsina honouring an ancient wine style.
About Papagiannakos
Founded in 1919, Domaine Papagiannakos is located in the Attika region of Central Greece, just 18 miles from Athens.
Today, the winery is run by the 3rd generation, Vassilis Papagiannakos, who has ushered in a new era of modern winemaking while still maintaining the family’s dedication to cultivating and preserving the region’s most famous indigenous grape, Savatiano.
Vassilis owns 10 hectares of vineyard in the Attica region, and maintains long-term leases on a further 20 hectares, with vines on average 50-60 years old. Rocky, sandy, clay topsoil nurtures low yielding bush vines, with limited irrigation employed.
Based in Mesogaia, the winery is near to the Temple of Artemis, the haunt of Dionysus, the patron saint of wine, where for centuries the ancient method of wine production has been maintained and honoured.
