2020 Martin Texier Grenache

Rhone Valley, France

A beautifully perfumed natural Grenache from the northern Rhone. A gem of a lo-fi wine.

About the Wine

While Grenache is more common in the Southern Rhone, there are pockets of it in the Northern region. The Texier's vineyards in Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban, where the Grenache is grown, are at the southern extremities of the Northern Rhone.

The grapes were harvested from 30-year-old Grenache vines planted in granitic soils full of limestone. The fruit is destemmed but then the stems are added back in to give the wine some savoury characters. After a maceration of one week, the grapes are then stomped by foot.

With only 12.5% alcohol, this isn't a heavy red but more of a vibrant, fruity quaffer that will pair well with roasted or grilled meat/veggies or anything spicy.

About Martin Texier

Like many children of winemakers, Martin initally resisted following in the footsteps of his father Eric, who had made a name for himself as a producer of "natural" wines in the Rhone Valley.

After spending time in the worlds of economics and music, Martin eventually felt the pull back to wine, and made his first vintage in 2014. He now makes wine from his five hectares of vines, planted to many of the classic Rhone varietals, located around the commune of St.-Julien-en-St.-Alban.

Martin has also decided to continue with the minimal-intervention practices of his father, by using natural yeasts and no sulphur. The excellent reception his wines have already received is surely a sign of great things to come.

Very gentle pressed after 1 week of maceration. 13.5% ABV with a full body but structured with a deep spine of acidity.

The Wine Front

"Highly perfumed, ripe raspberry, fennel and minty sniffs, sappy textured, soft, and some nougat-sandalwood notes. Lovely, fleshy expression, vivacious and interesting to drink. Nice stuff." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.
