About The Wine

This is a divergent wine away from the typical Vanguardist MO of interesting takes on McLaren Vale and Clare Valley classics.

The Corsair is a blend of three Portuguese red varieties, typically found in the famous fortified wines of the Douro. Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz having a party here. And they are having a great time.

The wine is medium-bodied, blue fruited and flecked with all matter of exotic spices. It's a lovely little red to take you on a trip away from the usual world of Australian reds. It's a fun and perky and lovely to drink.

About Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.

WINEMAKING

With our enthusiasm and slight obsession with France, and vision for this wine to be a pirate blend of three Portuguese varieties - Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz...the CORSAIR was born.

Harvested by hand and fermented separately in open-top 1t fermenters, these wines were gently plunged daily for 2-3 weeks before being basket pressed.

The three wines were held in a mixture of barriques (228L) and puncheons (500L) for about four months before being blended, prior to bottling without fining or filtration.

With both fresh red, almost crushed strawberry fruits from the Tinta Barroca, and broody dark fruits from the Touriga & Roriz it’s already drinking beautifully.

Blend : Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz
ABV : 13.90%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2025

The Wine Front

"One of those wines where you might smell purple, also floral and spicy, with some liquorice coming through as bass. Just over medium-bodied, has an attractive chewiness and density of tannin, something of a nori-like flavour too, and a silty finish of good length. Pretty and growly at once. It’s an altogether good wine offering a bit of extra interest." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
