In essence, it's a snapshot of the Yarra Valley vintage. The 2020 was a wild ride for the Giant Steps team but the wine that has emerged on the other side is a beauty.

It's sleek and elegant with all the prodigious length that has become synonymous with the Yarra and this variety. It's the perfect introduction to Yarra Valley Chardonnay for those looking to explore this much-celebrated wine style.

About Giant Steps

Giant Steps is a premium Yarra Valley outfit founded by Phil Sexton located in the in the township of Healesville. Since appointing Steve Flamsteed as his head winemaker and eventual business partner, Sexton and Flamsteed have developed a reputation for producing some of the region's finest examples of single vineyard wines.

From the vineyard to the final bottled wine, every aspect of the Giant Steps process is geared towards making truly world-class wines. The focus is on what the Yarra does best - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah and Bordeaux-variety blends - and showcasing the unique terroirs of some of the region's finest vineyards.

From The Producer

2020 was a particularly challenging vintage across much of Australia, but we were very lucky here in the Yarra Valley.
It was a bit of a rollercoaster - with a cool, wet Spring, a dry December and then a mild February, punctuated by a few significant rain events...

This all led to lower than average yields across our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, primarily driven by tighter, smaller bunches – the consequence of which is naturally high acidity and incredible bright flavours - fresh melons and a citrus edge.

100% hand-picked, all fruit is chilled overnight to 12 deg C.
Whole bunch pressed, fermentation on full juice solids, wild yeast.
Fermented entirely in 500L French puncheons – 10% new, 90% older.
No lees stirring.
20% of the blend has undergone spontaneous malolactic fermentation.
Matured in French oak – 10% new, 90% older – for only 8 months.
Blended and chilled in tank prior to bottling in late Spring.

Fried soft shell crab Bao, with fresh coriander and bean shoots.
Grilled fresh goats curd and olive tapenade on grilled sourdough and fresh rocket salad.
Roast crispy skin baby chicken, preserved lemon and roast garlic.
Aged Pecorino cheese drizzled with extra virgin olive oil.

Blend : Chardonnay (100%)
ABV : 13%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2025

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Juicy, bright citrus and stone fruit characters, licks of salty nuts and faint honeyed toast. Rolls around the palate with a sense of high refreshment and pristine, youthful, tight-skinned green grapines – you know, pluck a berry off the bunch straight out of the fridge and chomp. That kind of deal. Such a delight to drink, super easy to drink, a little polish and spit shine and we’re here! Nice one." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
