About The Wine

The Barossa Valley isn't exactly known for producing light and bright crunchy reds, but it takes innovative producers like Steve Crawford at Frederick Stevenson to push those conventions around.

In Steve's words, "this is the wine you just drink - smash against the wall - and walk out."

This is Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvedre from the biodynamically farmed Ahrens vineyard in Vine Vale with a portion of conventionally but sustainably farmed Grenache from the Hongell vineyard on the Western side of the Barossa.

It's bright and perky, a little untamed and loaded with personality.

The perfect entry into the world of Frederick Stevenson.

From The Producer

Partly due to what was available in the season, but also the Cinsault is really coming of age, the percentage is even higher this year. Previous iterations @ 12.5% alcohol have been in the leaner spectrum, this still has plenty of volume and body in the mouth, with plenty of plum and spice, with a touch of clingstone stone fruit and amaro / glazed peel characters coming through.

2019/20 growing season was one of two halves and plenty of emotions.... Very dry winter season and the dryness continued the whole way through. Amidst flowering, November, we experienced frost conditions, followed by 43 degree and windy weather.... this had profound impacts on yields across the board, but some varieties felt it more than others.

The hot and dry conditions continued right through until late January, however for the ripening season our weather went into autumn mode with moderate days and cool nights, meaning that ripening was slow and consistent.... As a result, low yields of great quality - fresh natural acid, ripe fruit with good tannin and spice. The pinata is a perfect illustration of  this.

All varieties were fermented separately, about 3 months in oak, and a small addition of sulphur prior to bottling.

All from the Ahrens's Vine Vale property (Cert. BD)

Blend : Cinsault (64%), Grenache (19%), Shiraz (15%), & Mourvedre (2%)
ABV : 12.5%

Sour cherry and rhubarb. Lipsmacking stuff - definitley 'a-typical' of the Barossa style. Bright crunchy, nearly ripe strawberry. Soft garden herbs and baking spices. Nutmeg, cinnamon. Pretty cool. Crushed rock and mineral laced tannins to close. Chewy and charismatic. - Different Drop Wine Team
