2020 Dicey Bannockburn Riesling

Central Otago, NZ

A soft and supple Central Otago Riesling that drinks crisply and superbly

About the Wine

The Dicey Bannockburn Riesling has all the characteristics you would likely expect from a cool-climate Riesling: aromas of apple, citrus and blossom, mouth-watering acidity, and a great vibrancy on the palate. As the wine is medium-dry, there is some sweetness, although it's pleasant and not excessive.

The cool temperatures allowed the Riesling grapes to slowly ripen and build up their aromas and flavours. Due to the abundant acidity and sweetness, the wine shows great balance, and it will age nicely for the next few years. Pair it with spicy Asian food.

About Dicey

Dicey wines is a family affair, with brothers Matt (winemaker) and James (grower) Dicey working together to craft elegant wines from Bannockburn in Central Otago.

All wine are estate-grown from their family vineyards; the Inlet, owned by James, Black Rabbit, tended by Matt, and Swansong owned by their parents. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, and currently in conversion to BioGro certified organic - the 2022 vintage will be the first certified releases.

In the winery, they follow the same sustainable and minimal intervention philosophy; natural ferments, minimal handling, and no fining of the finished wines.

Having established themselves with Mt Difficulty, this project is the realisation of the family’s dream to have full control over their work, and place primary focus on quality over quantity.

From the Producer

2020 set a new benchmark for challenges: disease pressure, rain and cold weather during flowering and fruitset led to in bunch variability. It was the coldest year since 2005. A protracted veraison and long ripening phase kept us on the back foot — the one bonus being how clean and tasty the fruit was! COVID-19 lockdown arrived with our first day of harvest. Even with all that adversity, the small berries were bursting with flavour and acidity.

The fruit was destemmed and pressed to tank where it settled for a week, before racking slightly cloudy for ferment. The wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts, stopping naturally with 30g/L of residual sugar. Bottled unfined but filtered in October.

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

"Medium riesling with citrus, lime, white flowers and a suggestion of oyster-shell. An initial impression of moderate sweetness is restrained by fruity acidity to give a medium-dry finish." Bob Campbell (The Real Review)
