About The Wine

There isn't much Pinot Gris planted in Stellenbosch but Mick and Jeanine Craven sniffed some out.

They treat it essentially like a red wine, separating the stems from the grapes and allowing the juice to soak on the skins for more than a week before pressing.

The final wine that has emerged is a lovely rose colour and packed with chewy, delicious flavours and textures. It's Pinot Gris the way it should be. Delicious and slightly wild drinking - it's impossible to not immediately reach for another glass.

About Craven Wines

Mick and Jeanine Craven met whilst lugging hoses in a Sonoma winery back in 2007. A relationship blossomed between the two, as did a shared passion for exploring the wide world of wine. Jeanine is South African, Mick is an Aussie; together they've made they've made their home in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

In Stellenbosch, they've found a mix of unique sites and terroirs that excite them and bring their imaginations to life. The wines that they craft from these sites are made simply but with great care and attention. Nothing is added to the wines save for a little sulphur. Transporting you to different pockets of their home through the medium of wine is their mission.

The wines are stellar and receiving great press. They are part of the small, energetic sect of South African wine labels rediscovering and reimagining their wine scene.

From The Producer

Pinot Gris isn't exactly an abundant grape planted in Stellenbosch, but it is something we have a lot of fun working with. Although a lot of the wine drinking world think and assume it is a 'white grape', it is in fact a lovely coppery/dark rose skinned grape. With this being the case, we just can't waste that colour and delicious flavour trapped in the skins, so we ferment this wine like a red. In 2020 we destemmed the fruit in its entirety and fermented it in open top fermenters. The juice is lightly pumped over or punched down throughout fermentation. The fermentation on skins gives the wine a beautiful rose coloured hue. We found due a slightly higher yield the tannins were lovely and refined which enabled us to keep the wine on skins for 8 days before pressing. Bottled unfined & unfiltered.

"Mick Craven is a mad Aussie winemaker drongo type who shifted to Stellenbosch and is doing great things in the avant garde set over there. Great to see his wines in Australia. Macerated for two weeks, this gris is a textural feast. Well handled. It opens with some reduction, so give it some air. Scents of apples, nashi pear, struck match, pomegranate. Chewy texture, ribbons of puckering texture, juicy core and a while lots of flavour appears here this is way more about the ride the wine gives you. Clips a long at a fair pace, feels refreshing yet kind of serious too. It’s an instant ‘yep, would drink a bottle’ kind of feel for me. Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
