2020 Craven Cinsault

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Vivacious lighter-bodied example of dry-grown bush-vine Cinsault.

Such a pleasing, charismatic wine but doesn’t forget to be a touch fancy too.

About The Wine

The Craven wine stable is built around a crew of vineyards that have resonance owners/operators Mick and Jeanine.

They had had their eye on the Rustenhof farm in the Faure region for a while and in 2017 they finally managed to get their hands on a parcel of bush-vine Cinsault. Coaxing the personality of the vineyard out in their wines is their specialty. In this wine you feel the crunch and pop of the graphite and sandy soils, the tension and energy that comes with grapes that are dry-farmed.

This is a bouncy, vivacious red wine that still carries complexity in tow. It's a charming wine for sipping on a warm afternoon.

About Craven Wines

Mick and Jeanine Craven met whilst lugging hoses in a Sonoma winery back in 2007. A relationship blossomed between the two, as did a shared passion for exploring the wide world of wine. Jeanine is South African, Mick is an Aussie; together they've made they've made their home in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

In Stellenbosch, they've found a mix of unique sites and terroirs that excite them and bring their imaginations to life. The wines that they craft from these sites are made simply but with great care and attention. Nothing is added to the wines save for a little sulphur. Transporting you to different pockets of their home through the medium of wine is their mission.

The wines are stellar and receiving great press. They are part of the small, energetic sect of South African wine labels rediscovering and reimagining their wine scene.

From The Producer

From 2017 we were lucky enough to be shown some fruit from a farm we have always wanted to make wine from, named Rustenhof. This great farm in the Faure area has an abundance of lovely Cinsaut, amongst many other varieties. This dry land, bush-vine block, planted in granite and sand, suits our style very well and is a pleasure to work with...

Uniquely to our usual red winemaking style, we destem our Cinsaut before fermentation. We find that Cinsaut has a lower acidity than Pinot noir and Syrah, so we like to capture the little acidity that it has (whole bunch ferments tend to reduce acidity). Gentle pumpovers or punch downs are performed 1-2 times a day throughout fermentation, and the wine is pressed to 500L barrels for maturation. We like to capture the fresher, brighter characters of Cinsaut, and thus bottle this wine earlier than our other red wines. Unfined & unfiltered.

Blend : Cinsault (100%)
ABV : 12.00%
Closure : Cork
Drink Until : 2025
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"A couple of weeks on skins, from Stellenbosch, from family Craven. Lighter shade of red. Good gear from this producer. Juicy, joyous red of crunch and chew, light and fresh in style, dusted with spice, draped in crisp, red berry fruit character. Has a lot of mojo. A touch of fruity sweetness in the mix but mostly tart, bright and fresh is the message, oh, and with fantastic tannins. Such a pleasing, charismatic wine but doesn’t forget to be a touch fancy too." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
