2020 Cota 45 UBE Miraflores

Jerez, Spain

It's like Sherry, but not. This is a dry Palomino aged under flor but made as a table wine. Blisteringly good if you like saline, sharp whites with a kick.

About The Wine

This is the best place to start if you are looking to explore the exciting wines of the boundary pushing Ramiro Ibañez.

This is a dry blend of Palomino from different sites in Miraflores Alto and Miraflores Bajo with 80 to 90 years of vine age. The wine is then aged in barrel under flor before bottling producing a dry table wine that shows characters slightly reminiscent of Sherry.

Ibañez is taking a look back at the historic winemaking traditions of the Jerez region and reviving some of the tried and true methods of old. This is the refreshing, saline, zesty result.

It's a fascinating drink. Savoury, textural, and pulsating with energy. Cracking value for the interest and deliciousness on offer here.

About Cota 45

Ramiro Ibanez is the brain behind the winemaking at Cota 45.

His aim is to breathe new life into the tradition of winemaking in Jerez, which has a rich history dating back to the 19th century and centring around the production of sherry. The use of Palomino and Pedro Ximinez grapes were favoured over the other 100+ varieties of grape in this area, resulting in them dying out - now Ramiro is working on resurrecting and protecting these other old, forgotten varieties.

His wines express the unique environment of Jerez, and each bottle tells a story of winemaking in the region.

Decanter Magazine

"Just a little bready flor influence (and mildly smoky) but essentially focused on the citrus-led fruit and floral aspects of Palomino, and the freshness and sapidity provided by the mixed albarizas of coastal pago Miraflores. Yellow flowers, fresh dewy apples and lemon rind. Great concentration. Exquisitely balanced and pure, with a long, laser-like mineral finish." - Darren Smith (Decanter)
