About The Wine

With no wine produced in 2020 thanks to smoke-taint,Tim Kirk at Clonakilla had to make the call to his extensive wine connections to source some pure grapes.

Louisa Rose and Yalumba came to his rescue in regard to the annual Viognier release, supplying beautiful clean ripe grapes.

And Clonakilla have delivered a poised, juicy Viognier full of pear and stone fruit characters, and just the right amount of richness.

About Clonakilla

Clonakilla is one of the true icons of the Australian wine scene. Since its inception, it has been one of the leading lights of the Australian cool climate wine insurgence.

They boast one of the most collectable wines in the country in their Shiraz Viognier, a wine of outstanding quality and consistancy over the last two decades.

Whether Shiraz, Riesling or otherwise, every wine in the Clonakilla stable is considered among the benchmark examples in Canberra District.

Quite simply, Tim Kirk and his family-owned estate is one of the true gems in the Australian wine industry crown.

From The Producer

In 2020 we suffered the catastrophe of losing our entire crop to smoke taint, a consequence of severe drought and the worst bushfire season in living memory. Generous friends came to our rescue with clean fruit from regions outside New South Wales.

The fruit for this ripe pear, ginger and peach laden Viognier came from the Yalumba vineyards in Eden Valley in South Australia. Thanks to Louisa Rose and The Hill-Smith family for making the grapes available for us.

DDS review

Aussie winemakers are generally a very helpful, generous bunch, and their reaction to the 2020 bushfire catastrophe highlighted this community spirit. Thus this lovely Viognier under the Clonakilla label hails from Yalumba in the Eden Valley, rather than high country NSW. Great wine, great sentiment.. - DD Wine Crew

The Wine Front

"The Hill-Smith family and Louise Rose got viognier to Tim Kirk and the Clonakilla family – a trade-off for losing all the fruit from the bush fire-affected 2020 vintage. I’ve been looking forward to seeing what wines would emerge from Clonakilla from these other resources. Very exciting. Wonderful to see such high pedigree collaboration too.Textural white of grip and high refreshment factor. A serious, complex and layered and intense white wine. Lots of chew and powdery-talc-like qualities to texture, dried pear, ginger, preserved lemon and the faintest wild honey character concluding with really pleasing, spicy-bitter notes. Great energy and drive, refreshment factor and yet plenty of structure, a wine to let come up to room temperature and check out the finer detail in. Feels like it’s in a good place." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
