2020 Ata Rangi Lismore Pinot Gris

Martinborough, NZ

A wonderfully balanced Pinot Gris from Martinborough, the perfect food wine or stand-alone aperitif.

Seriously good expression of gris here. Next level.

About the Wine

Influenced by the style of Alsace Pinot Gris, this offering from Ata Rangi still manages to display a uniquely Martinborough style.

It may be an easy-drinking wine, but don't let that fool you - it has fresh citrus and stone fruit flavours intermingled with a mouth-watering saline note.

It's extremely well balanced and textural, and is an excellent wine for almost any food you could dream to pair it with (and perfect just by itself, too).

About Ata Rangi

Ata Rangi vineyard was founded by Clive Paton and his sister Alison in 1980.

The aim was use the  to produce a Pinot Noir that rivals the best in the world. Today, it's fair to say, the dream has been fully realised.

The success of this small, family-owned producer is due in huge part to the formidable talents of winemaker Helen Masters. Helen was one of the key driving forces behind the vineyard's move to organic certification. Her focus on sustainability and vineyard health has seen the wines improve dramatically since her coming on board in 2003.

Ata Rangi is one of the jewels in the crown of NZ wine and one of the most respected producers of the 'New World'.

Additional Info

From the Producer

Fruits and baking spices are the focus of this very aromatic wine. Aromas of apple strudel with flaky pastry and poached pear, with a notes of hard cheese rind meld together. Succulent fresh acidity keeps this generous, complex wine flowing right to the back palate.

From vines now over 24 years of age, the depth and complexity of flavour make it one of our favourite and versatile wine matching choices, from antipasto platters to dishes with heady spice and/or challenging flavours. Fermented in neutral barrels for extra texture, this Pinot Gris will benefit from bottle age.

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

"Light yellow colour, bright appearance. The bouquet is very attractive mixed-spice, pot-pourri, ripe pear and creamy waxy yeast-lees aromas, the palate round and soft, without obvious sweetness. Fine balance and good length, just firmed up and dried off by a trace of tannin. A very stylish gris. Unusually dry for a New Zealand gris." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The Wine Front

"A textural feast! Slippery, dense yet comes away with the finest, chalky pucker. Quite inky in concentration, strong pear nectar character, but tamed with cinnamon spice (loads!) and lightly toasted almond flake textures and flavours. Seriously good expression of gris here. Next level." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
