About The Wine

Dave Mackintosh reckons the vineyard that supplies the fruit for this wine is "not great for dry Pinot but makes bloody good Rosé."

It's hard to argue, this is delicious.

Made from Pinot Noir, it's light, fresh and fragrant, with barrel ferment and lees stirring building in texture and grip to add interest to beautifully pure fruit.

Another lovely Arfion wine and everything good modern Aussie Rosé should be.

About Arfion

New Zealand born Dave "Bro" Mackintosh is the head man at Arfion.

After cutting his teeth at Oyster Bay, Dave settled in Victoria's Yarra Valley and after working with Steve Flamsteed at Giant Steps, began his own brand Arfion: which means 'Our Wine' in Scottish Gaelic.

Dave is all about letting the fruit do the talking, guiding rather than forcing, constantly searching for the simplest way to get young, energetic wines into the bottle for people to enjoy.

His Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are all effortless examples of wines made with a ‘less is more’ mentality. By working with some of the best growers in the Yarra Valley, Dave has put together a gorgeous range of wines that have interest and drinkability in spades.

From The Producer

Yarra Station Vineyard – Yarra Glen - Yarra Valley

Sourced from the Yarra Station vineyard in the Yarra Glen subregion of the lower Yarra Valley. These vines sit on a rolling, north facing slope of granite and grey clay soils that have ironstone running throughout.

Vintage

A wet and cold spring of 2019 led to a long and slow flowering period. The resulting poor fruit set meant our crop was well below average. A complete turnaround occurred in December with a warm and windy month drying out soils and forests. Bushfires ran all over the country from late December and the risk of smoke taint was ominous. We were very lucky that the smoke billowing into the Yarra was from far away bushfires, meaning the tainting chemicals were weak and could not permeate into the grapes. All tests we conducted and observed were clear. Bizarrely, after all this mayhem, we had one of the coolest and wettest January to March periods on record. This is the crux of the vintage. Very slow ripening followed with high botrytis risk, but the grapes retained subtle, fresh flavours and remarkable acids.

Winemaking Stats

Hand harvested early in the morning.

Fruit was whole bunch pressed direct to old barriques where it fermented slowly and naturally on full solids. Malolactic ferment occurred in approximately 80% of the barrels.

All barrels were lees stirred twice over the six month maturation period without sulphur. They were then assembled in tank, allowed to settle and racked once with a small sulphur add prior to bottling. No fining or filtration.

Bottling Date – 15th Sept 2020 pH - 3.52 TA – 5.4 g/L Alc – 11.5 %. RS < 2 g/L.

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2022

Pretty, delicate red berries, strawberries and some white chocolate and truffles on the nose. The palate is soft gentle and almost creamy, with juicy red berries, red apples and watermelon. Nicely grippy, long and refreshing finish. - Different Drop Wine Team
