About The Wine

The Brunnen vineyard is set amongst spectacular Australian bushland high on the hill behind Beechworth. Its high altitude and rugged soils make a perfect setting for high-class Burgundian varieties. The Chardonnay from this vineyard makes a beautiful wine for Tessa and Jeremy, as does the excellent Pinot Noir fruit.

This is a thought-provoking style of Pinot. Built in a savoury framework of herbal, undergrowthy mystery, the fruit purity from intelligent viticulture shines through.

This is one of the finest examples of Pinot Noir to be found from the region and highly worth investigating if you like savoury yet delicate versions of this variety.

About Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.

From The Producer

A lifted and primary nose with lots of squishy cherry and raspberry, then a melange of warm spice, wood and lightly crushed herbage. The palate is youthful and shapeshifting, at once raspberry-ish and primary, then also with gentle warm oak and the whisper of herbage peeking through with another swirl showing more blue fruits. Firm natural acidity and enough structural tannin to give this wine plenty of years ahead..

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)

Critic Reviews

93Points
The Wine Front

"We’re in good territory here. Bass and treble are pitched just so, complexity comes unforced, it’s drinking well now but it will develop well. Darker cherry and forest berry characters, rippling acidity, undergrowth and fresh garden herbs, flowers intact. It’s a beautiful, fragrant, fine-fingered red wine." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

90Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"Fruit from organic 26yo vines, hand picked/sorted. Destemmed whole berries were wild-yeast fermented then basket pressed; 10 months in barriques (15% new) then 4 months on fine lees in tank. A delicate wine just starting its journey. The bouquet is alive with the scent of soft aromatics, dried herbs, damson plums and red cherry. Slowly consolidating on the palate, building in flavour development and personality. Structure, however, is already sure and true, with a tannic firmness." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

Superb drop

A lovely full bodied Pinot Noir, with nice dryness in the middle pallete. Some unusual flavours not typically found in Pinot Noir make this a different but exceptional wine.
