About The Wine

A cool, classy example of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay here from Alan Varney.

This is just the way you should treat cool climate Chardonnay. It's fermented with wild yeast, stirred regularly in barrel, and kept in a trim, elegant frame.

These wines from Varney are incredibly stylish for the price. Fresh, modern, easily approachable yet imbued with enough complexity to keep you coming back for more. This Chardonnay is no exception.

Lovely stuff for those who enjoy finer, more slip-stream versions of Chardonnay.

About Varney

Varney Wines began with just a "tonne for fun" for Alan Varney to play around with over a decade ago.

He took his years of experience working at top South Australian wineries, including time spent at Orlando Wines, Longview Vineyard and over a decade as senior winemaker at d’Arenberg, and poured his skills into crafting a style of wine that he and his friends and family could enjoy.

The side gig became a full-time obsession, leading to Alan purchasing a dilapidated property at the Gateway of McLaren Vale to house a tasting room alongside his wife Kathrin’s restaurant, Victor’s Place. A sustainable modern winery was built. Their first commercial release was unveiled. The wines have been taking off ever since culminating with Varney being named James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2021.

Yields were very low in 2019 but quality was high for Chardonnay. Both vineyards were picked in early March, at just the right maturity level. The Echunga fruit retained its acidity well which balanced the slightly more fruit driven block in Macclesfied. Both vineyards were hand-picked, cold pressed, wild yeast fermented at cool temperature on full solids in Burgundy coopered barriques and kept separate until blending. A small portion of hyper-oxidised full solids ferment pressings were used in the final blend to add some texture and mouthfeel. Matured in barrel for 7 months with frequent lees stirring prior to blending and bottling. Contains minimal sulphites.

Blend : Chardonnay (100%)
ABV : 12.8%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2027
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

"Refined and subtly complex, a quite beautiful wine, creamy white peach and a hint of honey. A classic low alcohol early-picked Chardonnay. Really smart. This needed more time and/or breathing to show its full merit." - Nick Butler (The Real Review)

The Wine Front

"Nectarine and melon, Japanese ginger, wheatgerm. It’s peachy, spicy and full of flavour, a bit of cream and gloss, pink grapefruit acidity, some flint and fine chalky texture, juicy and long to close. Tasty. Very easy to enjoy." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
