About
It’s maybe the best Tonic Grenache I’ve tasted.

About The Wine

The same two Clare Valley vineyard sources combine in the 2019 release of Tonic Grenache, with an import addition of some fruit from 50-year-old vines planted in McLaren Vale.

The fruit is picked early precisely to maintain the beguiling floral aromatics that present in Grenache, in a drier vintage like 2019, this is even more important.

This is man-handled as little as possible on its way to bottle. A small amount of whole bunch in the ferment, only a gentle racking before bottling with a dash of sulphur. What you get is the very essence of SA Grenache; brightly fruited, impossibly drinkable and more-ish to the last glass.

If you've never tried the tantalising wines styles from Tonic, or never had a modern style of Grenache that has blown your socks off, there is no better way you could spend $32.

About Tonic Wines

Tonic Wines has only been around for a short time but the wines have caused quite a stir.

These are small batch, handmade, minimalist South Australian wines with an aim to source high-quality parcels of fruit, picked early to capture freshness and vitality.

Tonic declares "We don’t really believe in boring wine", and with the remarkable Rosé, Chardonnay, Grenache, Mataro and Nebbiolo released thus far, there are no signs of boring here.

These wines are produced in painfully small amounts, sometimes as little as 50 dozen per wine. If you are curious about this winery with mystique, you'll have to act quickly to try their delicious wares.

From The Producer

After the successful 2018 release we went back again to our two outstanding old vine Grenache sources: the Churinga Vineyard in Watervale and the Humphries Vineyard in Sevenhill. However with the drought conditions this couldn't provide us with all of the fruit we required. So we thought out of the box and contacted some friends in McLaren Vale and found some truly wonderful fruit from a 50 year old vineyard in the Blewitt Springs area of McLaren Vale

2019 was again a warm and dry vintage like 2018 and one in which those old Grenache bush vines thrived although with much smaller crop levels. It was much dry and pretty warm throughout, leading to smaller berries and thicker skins and, generally speaking, quite gutsy wines. Fortunately dry-grown bush vines fare really well in these intense, rain-free years - they've had a bit of practice over many decades! As in other warm years, like 2017 for example, we made sure we picked on the early side to retain freshness and acidity in the fruit.

After hand picking the fruit, we de-stemmed 75%, leaving the rest as whole bunches, then foot-stomped it and left it be. It spent 33 days on skins as it fermented naturally. Then through the basket press and into old French oak barrels. It was left on its lees, untouched, until racking in December 2019. It was bottled in May with a dash of sulphur, but without fining or filtration.

Flavour-wise it shares some similarities with the 2018: red berries, dried cherries and a hint of Campari spice. The palate is light in weight but not character. Lithe, fine, detailed tannin provides the foundation to the wine and it really carries the flavours along for the ride. Perfume, freshness, crunch; won't mind a light chill on a warm day.

DDS review

Crushed raspberry and licorice all-sorts, the floral overtones creating a playful Springtime feel. It has all of the juiciness and glassy, pristine Grenache fruit you could want. Sweet cherry fruit, a lick of refreshing acidity, gentle powdery tannin, some choc-dipped cherries in there too which scream of the McLaren Vale component. One of the most outright delicious Grenache wines you are likely to find. Outrageously good drinking. - Different Drop Wine Team

"Not enough Grenache came off the Churinga (Watervale) and Humphries (Sevenhill), so we have an augmentation here via a 50 year old vineyard located in Blewitt Springs, of roughly 60%. It’s done it no harm. It’s maybe the best Tonic Grenache I’ve tasted. Gee, this is very good. It’s pretty, quietly perfumed, bergamot, fresh mint, spice, and red fruits. Clean, clear, precise, with charming grip of what you might call ‘Nebbiolo tannin’, gentle authority, succulence and cool acidity, and the finish is very long, and pure, a little nibble of almond and spiced orange peel as it slides away. Beautifully made. Wonderful wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

More tonic please

For a novice wine drinker I have had great pleasure in drinking their wines and especially the Grenache. Matched very well with my stewed pork cheeks for dinner.

very tasty light grenache

The grenache comes in a great retro-style bottle. It is a lighter style of grenache than I usually drink, but it is very tasty and fresh.
