About The Wine

The Cote Shiraz comes from the Cote D'Or vineyard in central Pokolbin. This famed site has a rich history that stretches back to the pioneering Wilkinson family in 1866. While those original plantings are long gone, the new vines were put down in 1971 are thriving.

This is a perfectly pitched medium-to-full-bodied representation of Hunter Shiraz, rich yet floral and deliciously approachable in its youth.

It's an exceptional wine with all the characteristics you'd want to see in a Hunter Shiraz, plus it's killer value for money - yet another ripper from Thomas Wines!

From The Producer

Sourced from the famous Cote d’Or vineyard in central Pokolbin. At almost 200 metres above sea level, on the steep northerly slope of the ridge south of the Audrey Wilkinson Oakdale property. Cote d'Or was one of the first vineyards established by the Wilkinson family in 1866; by Alfred Wilkinson and his son Frederick (Audrey’s father). It was the fraternal home until the death of Alfred just before WW1. The original vineyard has long been pulled out, but seven acres were replanted on this ridge in 1971. The vineyard is dry-grown on relatively deep brown loamy soil, and scattered with permian fossils.

Hand-picked. The fruit was destemmed and cold soaked for 24 hours prior to fermentation. After a further seven days on skins the wine was pressed off to premium French oak (300L) hogsheads ranging from new (approx 20%), second use (approx 30%) and third/fourth use (50%). After about 15 months of maturation, the wine was blended and then bottled. Finally, there was a further 10 months of bottle maturation prior to release.

"Very fine. A majestic composition of tannins of noble detail and grit; blue/blackberry fruits, liquorice straps and a smear of black olive and bincho charcoal. Feels ethereal, by virtue of the structural bones. In turn, by virtue of a dry-grown vineyard, planted in '71. The finest tannin profile of the bunch." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)
