About

About The Wine

The Esprit is Peter Schell's Grenache dominant blend made from vines up to 160 years old.

The Esprit sees Grenache united with its old friends Mataro and Shiraz, however the quality of the Grenache fruit demanding front and centre stage in this iteration of the blend.

As Pete says, "With Esprit we are seeking a pure, finely structured expression of the Barossa."

This, as with all Spinifex's wines, is balanced to perfection. If you love old vine Barossa Grenache, value-wise the Esprit is as good as you will find from any producer in the region.

About Spinifex

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection.

He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.

From The Producer

Built on perfume, finesse and savoury structure, as it was then, the make up of Esprit changes year-on-year, while seldom sacrificing its 'Barossa Burgundy' tag. There's no Shiraz this year and little Mataro (which contributed 40% last year). Instead, we have 74% Grenache, 21% Cinsault and Mataro 5%, the Cinsault contributing to the pretty red-fruited perfumes and the crisp, mouthwatering tannins.

As always, the wine was sourced from a selection of very old vineyards on the northern (Ebenezer), western (Moppa) and eastern (Angaston Foothills) edges of the Barossa, as well as from Springton in Eden Valley. Vine age ranges from 75 to over 150 years, and all sites are dry grown with minimal vineyard inputs--old vineyards grown the old way.

Each parcel was fermented wild and macerations varied from between eight and 20 days (including partial for several parcels). The 2019 includes roughly 40% whole-bunch ferment and was raised on light lees in seasoned demi-muids, a 1250-litre foudre and stainless steel tanks until blending and bottling without filtration, 11 months after harvest.

Blend : Grenache (74%), Cinsault (21%) and Mataro (5%)
ABV : 14.5%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2031

Garnet.  A perfumed, aromatically deep Barossa red displaying a bright core of red cherry, tart raspberry, plum and tamarillo framed by both high toned dried rose petal and violet florals, and hazlenut, mace and blonde tobacco spice elements.  A medium weight and focussed palate that builds in weight and intensity in the mouth. Spiced plum, rhubarb and cherry flavours on attack turn to darker fruits and savoury, fresh drying tannin and plum skin like acids. Whilst strong and intense, the overall balance leans to levity, transparency of flavour and freshness. - Peter Schell (Owner/Winemaker)

"Unfiltered. Pete Schell adapts the blend of Esprit according to the season, and the drought year of 2019 features a strong grenache lead (74%, with 21% cinsault and 5% mataro). Dark berry fruits take on a savoury mood, layered with thyme and underscored by fine, drying tannins. The stress of the season contracts the finish a little, making this a vintage for the short term." - Tyson Stelzer (Halliday Wine Companion)
