2019 Snake & Herring Redemption Syrah

Great Southern, WA

Effortlessly stylish cool-climate Syrah perfect for lovers of terroir and minimal intervention, from WA's Great Southern region.

About The Wine

In characteristic Snake & Herring style, this is a bottle that tries to showcase the overlooked styles and subregions of Western Australia's Great Southern winemaking region.

The grapes for this ethereal take on cool-climate Syrah/Shiraz are a blend of three of Great Southern's gravel-soiled subregions: Mount Barker, Frankland River, and Porongurup. With a bit of carbonic maceration, a bit of whole bunch, a bit of old oak and a bit of new, this is a super slurpable drop full of juicy fruit-forward flavours underlined by some seductive savouriness and spice.

A natural fermentation and minimal interventions approach helps underscore the grapes' expression.

About Snake and Herring

Snake and Herring was founded in 2011 by two wine industry junkies, Redmond “Herring” Sweeny and Tony “Snake” Davis.

Compelled to walk away from their professional roles at the same time, Redmond and Tony decided to embark on a journey to create their own wine label. Over a parcel of epic Porongurup Riesling, an idea began to form. Many late night texts were exchanged and early morning vineyard rendezvous arranged and before long Snake + Herring was created and a Porongurup Riesling born.

From The Producer

The Shiraz from Mount Barker is located west of the township with gravelly low vigour soils on a ridge top with east-west rows. This vineyard has been the cornerstone of Redemption Syrah since 2012. The Frankland components are from the ridgetop of an old vineyard west of the township with a great northern aspect and well-drained gravels.

Fermented in open tops with wild yeast, there were several different small 1T ferments; the Frankland Syrah was fermented as 100% whole bunches using classic Maceration Carbonique. The Mount Barker fruit used 20% whole bunches in their ferments. The pressed wine was aged in a mix of new, 1 year old and older puncheons (500L) for 13 months (21% new).

The 2019 Redemption Syrah is a great follow up to the 2018…arguably our best vintage of this wine. A dry but cooler growing season was complemented with small crops leading to Syrah of great expression and balance. Raspberries, spices, anise and graphite notes are seductive. The palate is beautifully balanced: medium-bodied but intense red fruit and satsuma notes with savoury spicy meaty complexity. Long finish with creamy textural tannins, lingering notes of savoury umami complexity: graphite, soy, bon bon, anise, bacon.

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

"Medium to deep ruby-red throughout the glass. Blood plums and black peppercorns on the nose. Nice and bright forward fruit, simple but supple. The tannins grip a little firm form the mid-palate and shorten the finish somewhat" - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)
