Excellent wine. Most likely very age-worthy too.

About The Wine

The ‘Grounds’ wines from Seppeltsfield are a set of single-vineyard releases that in essence are a study on the hero grape of the region, Shiraz, and the unique micro-climates of the Barossa.

The Northing, from Marananga, is a brooding and intense expression of Shiraz. Though tightly wound, the ferrous nature of the sub-soils is evident in the wine, with depth and richness, sitting nicely alongside the chew of tannin.

Terroir driven, this wine speaks to place, while also demanding patience in order to see it through to its full potential.

About Seppeltsfield

Seppeltsfield is a Barossa icon winery, famous for its unbroken line of hundred-year old tawny release, and also for its Canary Island date palms which line the avenues of its amazing cellar and winery.

First established by Joseph and Johanna Seppelt in 1850, it has been back in private hands since 2007 after a period of corporate ownership, owned by winemaker Warren Randall.

Their incredible heritage of fortified wines is now being supplemented by a renewed focus on outstanding still table wines. The future seems as bright as its past.

Additional Info

The 2019 Barossa ‘The Northing’ was vinified through the historic 1888 Gravity Cellar. Built into the hillside on a series of terraces, gravity guides the flow of fruit down through the winery to deliver gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. 'The Northing' Shiraz was fermented in open fermenters, between 18 and 28 degrees and monitored daily over two by twelve-hour intervals. 'The Northing' was then matured for 14 months in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads.

The Real Review

"Very deep, dense red/purple/black colouring, the bouquet quiet and reserved, but figuring black pepper and sooty, graphite, earthy notes. The wine is formidably full-bodied and dense, almost chewy in its thickly-textured palate, masses of tannins framing a powerfully concentrated, dense wine that begs to be cellared and promises to reward the patient big-time. A whopper. (The Northern Grounds Vineyard: Marananga Block)." Huno Hooke (The Real Review

"Marananga Shiraz. Probably the ‘best’ of the 2019 Shiraz releases, and while all three wines show typical sub-regional character, this maybe stands out. All wines are equal, though some are more equal than others.Iron and ozone, dried flower, spearmint, baking spice, fresh, dense with a lot of presence in the mouth, stony feel to it, and plenty of chew to tannin. Finish sports perfume of dried herbs, bitter chocolate, a certain coolness, and a fair ‘mineral’ edge. Excellent wine. Most likely very age-worthy too." Gary Walsh (Wine Front)

"A seriously structured Barossa shiraz with a stack of fine tannins wrapped in blackberry and blue fruit, this opens up beautifully with some aeration with notes of summer flowers. A real iron fist in velvet glove finish. From the Marananga Block vineyard. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. Screw cap." - JamesSuckling.com
