About the Wine
The area of Montalcino in the south of Tuscany is renowned for the quality of its Sangiovese. The San Polo Rubio Toscana IGT has a beautiful deep colour and delightful aromas of red fruits and rose, as well as some spiciness, herbal notes, and earthiness. With balance, fine tannins, and a long finish, this is a lovely wine at a great price.
The Rubio is designated as 'IGT' ('Indicazione Geografica Tipica' in Italian), rather than 'DOC' or 'DOCG', due to the use of non-indigenous grape varieties of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The IGT category allows winemakers to do things a little differently, without needing to conform to the more stringent rules of the DOC and DOCG classifications.
About San Polo
Purchased in 2007, the San Polo estate brings together two separate Montalcino properties under the guiding hand of the famed Allegrini family of Valpolicella.
The combined plantings are superb, taking in over 16 hectares of vines in the Montalcino subzone of Castelnuovo dell’Abate on galestro soils (schistous clay).
With a state-of-the-art winery and leadership from Marilisa Allegrini, San Polo has achieved full certification for its organic farming, together with recognition for their sustainable environmental practices from Casa Clima.
