A new Rosé and another string to the bow of this blossoming McLaren Vale-based producer.
This is Mourvedre (Mataro) which is aged in cool, black Nomblot eggs on lees for three months. This aging builds lovely fluffy texture through the wine making for great mouthfeel.
It's fermented wild until it is totally dry, the natural earthy spice characters of Mourvedre making for a savoury, crunchy style of Rosé which is perfect for all occasions.
Poppelvej (pronounced 'Pop-ell-vee') is a pint-sized winery based in McLaren Vale started by young Danish sommelier-turned-winemaker, Uffe Deichmann with the help of his brother Jens.
The name Poppelvej translates to "the street of the poplar trees", a homage to the family home property of the same name.
Uffe now has a small, ramshackle winery dug into in the side of a hill in McLaren Vale. He produces tiny amounts of wine with a minimal intervention philosophy.
Low amounts of sulphur (but always some) are used, the ferments are all wild. Massive black concrete eggs and an array of oak vessels in varying sizes are used as fermenters. It's a small but love-filled operation he is running.
