About The Wine

Nick Spencer's wines are all about exploring the high country wine regions of NSW, and crafting delicious wines from the varieties that suit these regions best.  In the warm climate of Gundagai, Nick may have stumbled upon something brilliant with Italian variety Fiano.

Like in Campania and Sicily in Southern Italy, this wine combines full flavour and waxy texture with zippy natural acidity and savoury tinges.

It's a fascinating drop and another great example of why this variety has such a bright future in Australia.

About Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer made a name for himself after a hugely successful decade-long stint as chief winemaker at Eden Road, before deciding in 2017 to take the plunge and start his very own label.

The Nick Spencer wines are, like Eden Road's, focused on the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular, Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

With Nick's access to some of the region's best fruit, his wines are all about balance, style and drinkability, with Nick's stamp of quality on top. Tiny volumes made and an exciting producer to watch out for!

Additional Info

From The Producer

Fiano is an Italian white grape variety grown mainly in the warmer regions of Campania and Sicily in Southern Italy.

Vineyard Information

The fruit is grown on the Tumbalong vineyard in Gundagai which lies just south of the township of Gundagai in Southern New South Wales. The soil is predominantly red podsol rich in oxidized iron stone.

Winemaking

The fruit was hand picked and fermented as whole bunches, on skins for 1 month and then lightly pressed to old oak for maturation.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Gundagai Fiano displays exotic aromas of cumin spice, cardamom and fennel seeds along with subtle roasted peppers and stone fruit. As the notes suggest, the wine is exotic and full flavored with a lovely grippy texture from fermentation on skins.

Food & Serving Suggestions

This wine demands salty foods such as olives, cheese, anchovies and fried foods. A perfect wine paired with Spanish tapas.

"What a good grape Fiano is for our warmer climes. I drank a heap of it when I was last over in Southern Italy, along with Bombino Bianco, Greco, Malvasia, etc.  Distinctly floral, almost soapy perfume, apricot and liquorice root, and a fair amount of exotic spice. It’s an unusual version of Fiano, but it has the texture going on, with fine chalk and raw almond grip, golden apple and bitter lemon, a waxy richness, and enough acidity to balance. Finish is long, aromatic, and juicy. I find this very interesting, and it’s nice to drink too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
