About The Wine

You'll be sure to fall in love with this medium-to-full sized Margaret River Chardonnay - a single vineyard wine from the Burnside vineyard, laying right by the river bank and just a stones throw away from the ocean.

Lots of rich tropical fruit, roasted nuts and a creamy long finish, but there is a flavour and textural complexity here, with some exotic florals and spices, and some ringing acidity.

It's powerful, focussed and layered. It's a wine to sit down and contemplate.

About McHenry Hohnen

David Hohnen, not content with founding both Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay, also established McHenry Hohnen in 2004. It was a partnership with his brother in law, Murray McHenry, a well-known hotelier and retailer, who had planted his first vines twenty years earlier, supplying fruit to Cape Mentelle! An intricate web...

Though Hohnen retired in 2017 his pioneering work in organics and biodynamic viticulture continues.

The McHenry Hohnen wine estate now comprises twelve different varieties planted across the Hazel and Calgardup single sites, and the large Rocky Road farm, that is responsible for some great value entry level wines.

About The Producer

100% Burnside Vineyard. Located on the bend of the Margaret River, this old vineyard grows on unique micaceous black soils. The chardonnay rows are on a steep northerly aspect running in a north-west, southeast orientation.

Grapefruit, grilled peach and freshly baked pastry give way to flinty complexities. Wild ferment and extended time on lees contribute to a delicious savoury character to the palate which is both powerful and defined by a core of natural acidity.

Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and transferred directly to oak with full solids. Fermented by the native years in barrique (approximately 30% new). Post ferment, barrels are left cool but unsulphured for 4 months to encourage autolytic activity. Batonnage every two weeks based on flavour and partial MLF to balance the high natural acidity of this vintage.

Blend : Chardonnay (100%)

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

"Layered aromas of struck-match, grapefruit pith, bacon fat, grilled nuts and white flowers—complex gear. Powerful and focused flavours: there's white peach, grapefruit, honeydew melon and spice. The oak frames the wine nicely and the acidity and phenolics bring structure, savouriness and cut to the palate." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

Halliday Wine Companion

"All 3 single-vineyard chardonnays are made in the same manner: hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, wild ferment in barrel (25% new) with full solids, partial mlf. From the oldest vines (planted 1981) the Burnside is the smoothest, most cohesive, most consistent of McHenry Hohnen's 3 single-vineyard chardonnays. This consistency on the palate breeds richness somehow, with mlf building density and resonance." - Erin Larkin (Halliday Wine Companion)
