About The Wine

Viña Almate was the name of the first vineyard Alfredo ever planted. This is a cracking Tempranillo made from old bush vines grown on various plots from 700m asl in Peñafiel  to 1000m asl in the Valtiendas mountains.

All hand harvested, as is the only way with these vines, the fruit comes into the winery as perfect whole clusters. Alfredo ferments this wine as is - bunches and all.

It results in a lighter, spicier, more fruit forward style of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) which is meant to be drunk in its youth.

About Maestro Tejero

Alfredo Maestro makes some seriously excellent, expressive, and inexpensive wines from his home in Ribera del Duero.

Defying the conventions and regulations of his region, Alfredo is a self-taught grape-grower and winemaker who learnt how to make wine straight out of a textbook. After a few years of seeing the wines made by classic methods, with adjustments and additives, he threw the textbook away and pursued a more unadulterated, natural way of making wine.

That proved to be a great decision with his wines find plenty of fans across the planet for their raw drinkability and irreverence. These are stripped back Spanish Garnacha with plenty of attitude.

From The Producer

For the 2019 vintage, the grapes came from different plots, mainly from the area of Nava de Roa (in the province of Burgos). The grapes were hand-harvested and crushed but not destemmed. Fermentation of each plot was kept separate and occurred in stainless steel tanks, with natural wild yeast, daily pump overs, and absolutely no corrections or additions. After a maceration of 12-15 days the wine was racked and left for spontaneous malolactic fermentation. After 30 days it was racked again to remove impurities and solid residues and encourage natural stabilization. Given the natural nature of its upbringing, it is normal for some precipitates to appear in the bottle during its lifetime.

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy).
