2019 Luna Estate Blue Rock Pinot Noir

Martinborough, NZ

Concentrated and elegant Martinborough Pinot with a flowing, graceful palate.

About The Wine

Blue Rock is one of the two vineyards that make up Luna Estate, and its old vines produce a single site wine of depth, succulence and gentle power.

First plantings were way back in 1986, the very early days of NZ viticulture!

More approachable in its youth than its sibling, the Eclipse Pinot, it has density and silkiness in equal measure.

All destemmed but with a fairly long maceration and a year in French oak. A lo-fi wine with no added inputs apart from minimal sulphur.

About Luna Estate

Luna Estate was formed a few years ago by the combining of two Martinborough vineyards that were formerly Alana Estate and Murdoch James into a new venture.

The two Martinborough vineyards are Blue rock and Eclipse, and their flagship wines are single vineyard expressions of these two different terroirs. Though focused on Pinot Noir (they replanted a fair whack of Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot!) they also release excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Rose, Chardonnay and Syrah, under the guidance of chief winemaker Joel Watson.

From the Producer

Hillside frost-free site planted over limestone and clay. The oldest Pinot Noir block was planted in 1986 and is still on its own roots. Distinct from the Eclipse vineyard because of vastly different geology with the clays that deliver rich, velvety texture. This is perhaps a more approachable wine than Eclipse, but still with elegance and underlying power.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Sourced from 1986, 1995 and 1996 plantings, with 20% new oak. Lovely unforced feel to this wine. Fragrant with bergamot, red cherry, a little spice and a mulchy earthy character. It’s lush and quietly juicy, a little orange peel punctuates the squishy red fruits, with fine silty tannin, and a succulent finish with a smattering of amaro herb and tang. Lovely drink. Good now, too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Real Review

"Fragrant pinot noir with violet, cassis, dark cherry and a suggestion of chalky-mineral flavours. A bright, fresh wine with fine, furry tannins. Good now but should get better within a few years." - Bob Campbell (The Real Review)
