About The Wine
Owen Latta is a young dude with an old head on his shoulders.
He loves old school Cabernet. Traditionally, a more medium-bodied expression of the variety was in vogue. Somewhere along the way, winemakers got lost in a sea of over-ripe, over-oaked examples. Owen is bringing a more elegant style of the variety back.
This is fruit from Yandoit vineyard, down the road from Owen's winery. It sees 20-25% whole bunch and spends seven weeks on skins before pressing allowing the tannins to soften before being sent to large casks for ageing.
It's a delicious, mid-weight Cabernet we have here. Slinky, sexy and stupidly good to drink.
About Eastern Peake / Latta Vino
Is anyone working as hard as Owen Latta to put Ballarat in the mix of Australia's foremost wine regions? At only 15 years old he completed his first vintage at Eastern Peake alongside his father and has since taken on the full-time running of the business.
Owen is the man primarily responsible for both the Eastern Peake and Latta wines, the former of which being dedicated to premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Eastern Peake vineyard, and the latter being Owen's personal project all about innovation from a range of excellent central Victorian vineyards.
The wines are all gently brought to life with very astute yet hands-off winemaking, and Owen's low and zero-sulphur wines are some of the best examples in the country. These are thrilling, absolutely unique Victorian wines, and quite simply Owen Latta is one of Australia's finest young winemakers.
