About The Wine

The team behind Vanguardist uses the 'Petit Vanguard' label to experiment on certain parcels of fruit in order to find a better path in producing their excellent premium Vanguardist label.

The Grenache is a wine built for easy consumption, early drinking, and something that goes with a wide array of food styles.

The intense but low yeilding vintage of 2019 supplied fruit that could handle plenty of whole bunch, as such about 70% of the Grenache this wine was fermented as whole clusters giving lightness and freshness to counteract the natural density of the fruit.

It's bright, lively and spot on for a fresh example of McLaren Vale Grenache.

About Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.

Additional Info

From The Producer

The summer of 2019 was brutal. There were several above 40-degree days that hit our dry grown vines hard, especially on the back of already drought conditions. We saw an excellent quality of Grenache across two different hand picks, but a lowly yield of around 15HL/Ha, 60% below the long-term average, and the lowest crop in the entire 51-year history.

The final wine sees around 70% whole bunch, some carbonic, some more traditional. Old 500L puncheons housed the wine for about 8 months post-press before the final wine was blended and sent to bottle without fining or filtration.

Blend : Grenache (100%)
ABV : 13.3%

"A musk perfume over red berry, meaty and spicy too, peanut shells and dried herb in the mix. It’s fresh and juicy, all the red berries, but layered in with spice, sap and some earthy stuff. Almost comes over like a cru Beaujolais, which is perhaps the intent, though of course it’s identifably Grenache in character too. Tannin has a light grip, and the finish is good. It’s an excellent thing to drink." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
