About The Wine

The Blonde has become something of a Barossa Valley staple for those seeking the next wave of premium Barossa Shiraz for their cellar.

The Blonde is the more seductive and elegant of the Head Shiraz as a younger wine, but she's no slouch in the cellar.

A classic release of this much loved Shiraz from Alex.

About Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.

These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

Additional Info

From The Producer

The original source vineyard for The Blonde lies in the Stone Well parish on the mid-rise of the western-ridge at 280m altitude and has a myriad of soil types including sandy-loams, red clays and a limestone rock base — blonde in colour — running the length of the vineyard. It crops naturally at around 1.5 ton/acre, shows perfume, blue & stone-fruits, produces riper, plumper, sweeter fruited wine, while still retaining acidity due to the higher limestone content of the soil.

In some years a very small percentage of viognier skins are included in the ferment for aroma, to soften tannin, set colour, add texture and more complexity with bottle age. Whole-bunch is utilised on a vintage to vintage basis while foot-treading, hand-plunging and pump-overs is usually the norm. 15-18 months maturation in smaller French oak of which up to a third can be new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered under Stelvin capsule.

The Wine Front

"100% Shiraz from Stone Well (80%) and Menglers Hill (20%). Average age of vines is 30 years, with 30% new French oak. Fragrant with musky rosy perfume, creamy chocolate and vanilla, black and blue fruits. It’s succulent and supple, with fine stony, yet chewy tannin, an ample volume of purple fruit, and a long and controlled chocolaty finish, plus a little sage and grilled meat. Typical style for this wine, although perhaps a little deeper and darker than usual." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Real Review

"Very deep, glowing colour—more purple than red at this tender age. The bouquet is pristinely fresh, clean and bright, exuding blueberry and blackberry fruit aromas laced with varied spices that include pepper, while the palate is full-bodied and nicely concentrated, without excessive heft or grip, and the oak has been subtly played. The tannins are supple and rounded, so the wine can already be approached, although it would be premature to drink it now." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)
